WORK EVIDENCE THAT THE
HIGH COST IS FALLING
Flivver-maker Ford Isn't Only One to Lift Burden
from Poor Man's Back.
The skies are brightening and the drift of prices
is downward, says the Los Angeles Times. We are
now informed that it is possible to buy a slide trom-
bone for $25. One should be able to strike a cheery
note with a thing like that.
A trombone may not be one of the necessaries of
life, but even a child watching a trombone perform-
er at his fascinating work would be satisfied that
it was filling a long-felt want. It seems that a trom-
bone can enter into the human face farther than
anything possible could save a pickax. A trombone
comes nearer being physical nourishment than any
other musical instrument known to man.
At least that is the way it will strike the careless
observer, and it is easy to see where the bony part
comes from. But with trombones going at $25 per
each our beloved country is once more reasonably
safe. It is a great improvement when people turn
from the bazoo and take to practicing on the trom-
bone. A man who has played with the plunger on
the bicycle pump ought to be able to work one fine.

The custom of advising prospective buyers as to
piano qualities is nothing new. It has been done
ever since the pin-money music teachers hung out
their shingles. But making a profession of doing
it, and openly advertising to sell the expert advice
is rather a novelty. That is what is being done by
a gentleman of San Francisco whose card reads as
follows:
With a Playerpiano the knowledge and enjoy-
ment of the world of music is available to everyone;
for without any training you can play Popular Airs,
Dance Music or the finest Classics. The greatest
teachers admit the importance of the Playerpiano.
The fascinating charm of the Playerpiano creates
a personal familiarity with the unlimited produc-
tions of musical talent, which is shared by every
member of the family. The necessary peculiarities
and complications of the Playerpiano construction
give rise to certain problems, hence the importance
of securing the services of a strictly impartial
Playerpiano Expert and Adviser in making your
choice and selection. The judicious selection of a
Playerpiano will result in a lifetime of pleasure;
otherwise your instrument may prove a continuous
annoyance and expense.
It would be unfair to classify Mr. Waterhouse
with the old-fashioned "commission fiends/' who
flourished in days agone. Members of that tribe
worked in gumshoes and pretended to give their
expert advice gratis and for the exclusive and con-
fidential benefit of the dear pupils and their parents.
The commission evil grew so annoying to the trade
that many prominent houses advertised' that they
would pay no commissions. Notably was this the
case with the several houses of the Wurlitzer Com-
pany, and it helped to clear the atmosphere.
But Mr. Waterhouse does his expert advising
openly and, without doubt, he earns every fee that
comes to him. He is, in other words, an animated
edition of Presto Buyers' Guide.
MISS BOYD, EXPORT EXPERT.
The big industry of the Jesse French & Sons
Piano Co., New Castle, Ind., has adopted the prin-
ciples of the suffragettes and a bright young lady
is in charge of the export department. And Miss
M. Boyd is making a success of her important du-
ties. The young lady was in Chicago Wednesday
of this week, passing on her way home from New
York where she made some good contracts with
representatives of foreign houses. It doesn't take
much of an interview with the young "piano lady"
from New Castle to realize that the Jesse French
& Sons Piano Co. has a well directed export depart-
ment. President Jesse French, of the New Castle
industry, is expected home from his European trip
some time this month.
