COMMUNITY SINGING
IN OGDEN, UTAH, STORE
W. H. Wright & Sons Have Inaugurated Song
Periods With Great Success in Western City.
The adoption by department stores of community
singing as a morning "bracer" is reported. The
officers of the W. H. Wright & Sons Co., of Ogden,
Utah, are so pleased with their experience that they
are using a big electric sign to call the attention
of the public, to their semi-weekly "sings." The sign
reads: "WRIGHTS. COME SING W I T H US
TUESDAY, 8:45 A. M."
The song periods in this store were inaugurated
by the Community Service, Inc., with which the
National Bureau is co-operating in many fields for
the spread of democratic music under the direction
of Harry Murrison, the Ogden representative.
"I am free to confess that when Mr. Murrison
first suggested the idea to us, I was a bit skeptical,"
said a mmber of the firm. "It seemed rather vision-
ary to expect that a crowd of store workers would
enjoy getting out earlier than usual of a morning
to sing a song. But they did, every last jack of
them, and they sang right at the start."
The president of the firm has become such a
convert to the community singing idea that he made
an address at one of the Saturday evening "sings"
at City Hall Square, telling of the singing in the
store and endorsing the community music work
carried on in the city by Community Service. He
also wrote an article on the song work for a local
daily to which he gave the heading "Smile the
While," a line taken from the popular community
song, "Till We Meet Again."
C. M. Tremaine, director of the Chamber's Ad-
vancement Bureau, is anxious to know what the
music dealers throughout the country are doing to
develop music in the industry of their community.
He suggests that the dealers answer his query re-
cently sent broadcast through the trade press for
lists of industrial establishments in their cities which
have tried music and found it successful, those which
have tried it and not found it successful and those
which have not tried it at all.

It takes more than a convention address favoring
the French finish for pianos and players to notice-
ably affect a large proportion of the piano purchas-
ing public. A Kansas City paper recently repro-
duced some suggestions and views expressed at a
convention of piano men in the East. They alluded
to the growing preference for French finish cases
