Wives of the Growers Tell How Hands Are Kept
on Job by Phonographic Strains.
That music in the home is as essential to the well-
being of the family as are the meals upon the table
is the declaration of one woman reader of the
"Prairie Farmer,'' a weekly farm journal published
in Chicago. That paper recently had a feature arti-
cle on "Music Makes Home Life Happier."
Communications from dozens of subscribers reveal
many uses to which music is put on the farm with
which the urban resident is not familiar.
On one farm the threshers are entertained during
the luncheon hour by strains from a phonograph
set up in the shade of a tree on the bank of a brook
which runs through the field.
"It is my experience that music, aside from a
good husband and the dear children, has contributed
more to the happiness of my married life than any-
thing else," writes Mrs. E. C. Cavins, of Coles coun-
ty, Illinois. On the birthday of each member of the
Cavins family the other members make it a practice
to give him a phonograph record. By this means
the record library is frequently replenished.
"I find," writes Emma Shula, of Will county, Illi-
nois, "that it is a great recreation for the hard-work-
ing men on threshing days to play a nice selection
of John McCormack or some one like that while
they are eating their dinner. It helps them to for-
get the hard work they have accomplished the first
half of the day."

THE CATECHISM STYLE
Virginia Dealer Tries Out the Plan of Ques-
tions and Answers to Awaken Interest
and Pull Prospects.
Anything approximately new is of general inter-
est to the trade. In advertising there is seldom any-
thing that is at all new. Therefore the plan of a
branch piano house at Lynchburg, Va., may serve a
good purpose, as an example.
Under an engraving showing an urchin at his desk
in school, with the head, "Examination on Pianol-
ogy," the advertisement runs as follows:
Q. Why should you have music at home?
Ans. Because music is a necessity. It dispenses
happiness, refreshes and cheers the old folks, and
creates in the young folks a love of home.
Q. (a) Name some high grade musical instru-
ments; and (b) tell where they may be found.
Ans. "Blank," the leading piano of the world;
grand upright and players, and others.
Q. State the prevalent financial plan of purchase
at the place you have named.
Ans. Easy terms to suit my convenience. I make
a moderate payment down, then Blank's send home
my instrument at once. I pay a little for the bal-
ance each month.
Q. Give at least six reasons for your preference
as to music stores.
Ans. 1. Blank's have large stocks. 2. Instru-
ments nationally famous for quality. 3. Give courte-
ous, quick service. 4. Add no interest or extras of
any kind to the purchase price. 5. While their
prices are exceptionally reasonable, they feature
quality, not mere cheapness. 6. They guarantee
complete satisfaction.

In suggesting to parents the way to bring out
the best in children, the Davis, Burkham & Tyler

was printed by the company this week: "You sur-
round your children with every beautiful thought
and action known to you. You want their lives to
be sweet and clean—so that in years to come they
may retain the influence of that beauty which you :
so carefully instilled into their minds and hearts—
a lasting memory of the love and happiness that
made up their home."
EVERY MAN. WHETHER
