MUSIC TO KEEP DOWN
HIGH COST OF LIVING
Meeting of National Association of Music Su-
pervisors Discloses the Great Economic
Part Music Assumes Today.
The relation of music to farm life and its part in-
cidentally in reducing the high cost of living were
considerations providing themes for discussion at
the thirteenth annual conference of the National
Association of Music Supervisors in Philadelphia,
which was attended by C. M. Tremaine, director of
the National Bureau for the Advancement of Music.
The meeting was the most successful in the his-
tory of that.organization. Over fifteen hundred su-
pervisors were present, which wjas double the num-
ber at any conference heretofore held. When it is
realized that the education of the coming generation
to an appreciation of the beauties and delights of
music is largely in the hands of these supervisors, it
can readily be understood what potentiality for good
the conference represents.
That something will have to be done in the rural
districts to make life more attractive is a fact gen-

erally admitted. There must be a large enough
number of people on the farm to maintain the nor-
mal, healthy balance between agricultural areas and
industrial centers. It is not, in the main, a financial
proposition, and if it should become so it would
mean further soaring of the cost of food. If more
music in rural communities makes life more en-
joyable and so helps to prevent the abandonment
cf farms, it is serving a great economic as well as
social and educational purpose.
OF SUPREME INTEREST TO
NATIONAL ADVERTISERS
Reindictment of The Colgate Company by the Gov-
ernment Will Have Important Legal Results.
Every manufacturing industry which has adopted
a scheme of national advertising in order to stand-
ardize the prices of its products, is interested in the
final outcome of the Colgate case, as it is familiary
called. The reindictment of the The Colgate Com-
pany means that the Department of Justice will
persist in its vigorous measures to end all forms cf
price-fixing.
That the previous decision, which declared legal
the business methods of The Colgate Company, will
be reversed in the new hearing, is the confident
view of Government officials. But seemingly this
does not distress many of the manufacturers whose
interest in the outcome of the case is obvious. It
is the belief in some quarters that should the Gov-
ernment win the reindictment case against The Col-
gate Company, legislation framed to overrule the
decision would at once be sought for. The argu-
ments to Congress would be that a standardization
of prices tends to stabilize trade.

AN APPEAL DISMISSED.
Dismissal of a suit brought by the Manley Piano
Company, Huntington, W. Va., against the Hunting-
ton Storage Company was ordered last week in the
ccurt of common pleas, where it had been taken on
an appeal from justices court decision, on the
grounds that it had been improperly dr pointed out that the suit was directed against the
storage company as a corporation and that the firm
was not incorporated under the laws of West Vir-
ginia. Sam Biern, attorney for the piano company,
agreed to pay the costs and announced proceedings
would be instituted against the owner of the com-
pany.

agency, which became effective April 1.

PIANO SALE UNAUTHORIZED.
Mrs. Theresa Augenstein of 17 Grove street,
Rochester, N. Y., was last week arrested on a
charge of grand larceny in the second degree for
obtaining under false representation, $150 from Ed-
wsrd H. Ropelt and William T. Pritchard. The ar-
rest is said to have been caused by a disagreement
between husband and wife concerning the owner-
ship of a piano. The woman sold the piano to Rob-
ert Pritchard for $150, representing it as her own,
but in an affidavit Emil A. Augenstein made a state-
ment to the effect that he was the owner of the
piano and had not authorized the woman to dispose
of it.
