l ETTERS Thanks are due I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you in writing for the help you gave me over the phone when I was researching my assignment. I don't know whether you remember me, but I called regarding equipment poll information, which you sent promptly on two occasions. I think I would have been lucky to get even one page from anyone else. There are not many people out there who would take the time to help a student up against a blank wall. But this isn't just a thank you letter (and no, I'm not asking for more help!) I'd like to explain the angle I took on this assignment. I took the equipment polls you sent and com- bined the games on one list. I then asked a group of students to list their five favorite games. I then compared this list to your list, resulting in an analysis of the statistical relevance of a large scale survey (yours) compared to a small scale survey with a more specific target group (mine). There were some major differences between the two. Games like Tetris did much better on my survey than on yours, while some of the violent games did slightly worse. This could be due to the fact that these are newer and not as well known to students (who are perennially poor and don't have the time to visit arcades on a regular basis). Also, Tetris is widely available in home versions. Again, thank you for your help. Without it, my assignment would have been greatly inferior. By the way, I'm happy to tell you that I got an A!
