Video copyrights
, read wi th considera ble interest Mike
Sha w's a rticle in the June 15, 1982 issue on
video copyrights. I'm trying to avoid
forming a final o p inion because this is such
a pivotal case for our ind ust ry. Bu t, as a
former electronic engineer who spent
many years as a computer programmer, ,
was a little surprised to read a quote
credited to R ichard Stern that ..... object
code .. .is not intelligible to human beings ..
, remember the days whe n th e only way
a tough program bug could be located was
to call for a "core dump" which is the
entire contents of memory written in
bi nary I' and O's, and ' would sit there for
day breaking down "program status
word s, " "opera tion codes," and "operands"
until the nas ty little naw was found .
' think if M r. tern would talk to enough
programmers, he would find that object
code is not tha t mysterious .
