Sirs :
After attending AMOA conventions for so many years and having such
wonderful times I feel that the knowledge and friendships gained is priceless to me !
Now , with the coming of this convention , I' m up in the air about whether to
attend or not . Let me state some of the reasons .
1 know for the past year the controversial letters have been flying about ASCAP .
I' m not the one to blame anyone , because , believe me , I make plenty of mistakes
myself - but there are some misgivings on how our association handled the ASCAP
deal. But that was yesterday-let 's forget that and go on with today .
First , I think the AMOA should come out with strong guidelines on how our
dues are to be paid ; also , whatever other committments we have with ASCAP. I
think AMOA should stop fighting and make the best deal they possibly can with
ASCAP once and for all so that we could go on with the other business at hand.
All year long I've heard about music and ASCAP , but believe me , while it's very
important , it has become secondary . The music operator has actually become a
video game operator with about 85% games and 15% music . I wonder how I stack up
with the other operators in the AMOA?
It's time the AMOA turned its full attention to the video game business . Ninety
percent of the operator's time is being spent in the game business. It's time the
AMOA got involved in the same manner. The publicity of the video games has
brought in so many new operators that the old ones are having a tough time trying
to keep up with buying new games and holding on to locations that we've had for
the last 15 years .
Also , many operators , unfortunately , have run into some form of trouble with
manufacturers and could use some guidance from the AMOA . It's unfortunate that
the AMOA and the manufacturers never got together and had a clear understanding
on how to help and respect each other's position . My personal feeling is (and I' m
not being sarcastic) that the AMOA never wanted to get involved too much in our
game operation . I' m looking forward to the day when our association will come
forward to help its members who are operating video games .
Most of the correspondence that I have received this year from the AMOA has
been very vague and very little is said. True , it is a hell of a good functioning
organization , but a lot of us feel that the whole association is run by a certain few.
When the chips are down the member is left out in the cold .
After re-reading my notes I want to state that I have a lot of faith in the
organization but it's time for drastic changes within . Unless they are made, members
like myself will shake their heads and feel the respect we've had for the association
has diminished so much, that there is no need to attend the conventions .
Hoping of better changes so that we can all come to the convention feeling w e
are on a march forward instead of the quandary we are now in!
