protecting the proprietary rights of
ma n ufactu r ers regarding ne w
games.
On the first point, numerous
manufacturers-including most of
the charter members of ADMA-
have served notice to the operators'
national association, AMOA, that
they will not exhibit at the 1982
AMOA Show if that show is held, as
scheduled, in Las Vegas (see PLAY
METER, January lS,pages 28-31) .
These manufacturers are balking
at the idea of an industry trade show
in Las Vegas because, they contend,
it would suggest connections
between gambling interests and
coin-operated amusement machines.
And this, they say, would create a
negative and possibly hostile
governmental predisposition against
their products.
Several ADMA members in the
recent past have even called for an
industry stand against so-called
"gray area" video games (such as
blackjack and video poker games) .
They claim these machines are
actually camouflaged gambling
devices which are exploiting local
and state laws designed to regulate
pure amusement machines.
To date, the operators' national
association has not taken a position
on this issue, although several state
associations of operators have
joined in the protest against the
proliferation of these devices.
On the second point, following
numerous instances of manufac-
turer copying popular video
amusement games, both in the
United States and abroad, many
American manufacturers- including
a number of those listed as charter
members of AD MA- have begun to
take a more aggressive approach
toward protecting their proprietary
rights.
At recent industry trade shows in
London and Frankfurt, manufactur-
ing firms which are now members of
ADMA successfully gained injunc-
tions against the showing of games
which they alleged were copies of
games to which they held the

proprietary rights.
NAMA is ready at Phoenix
CHIC AGO- More than 100 exhibit-
ors have reserved space for the 1981
NAMA Western Convention/Exhibit
of Vending and Foodservice
Management, which will be held in
Phoenix for the first time, April 3-5.
"We expect to top the record
number of 144 exhibitors of 1980,"
said Jack Reilley, NAMA director of
sales, adding that 14 first -time
exhibitors have already signed up.
This will mark the first time since
its beginning in 1960 that the NAMA
Western Convention has been held
outside California. "The beautiful
exhibit hall in downtown Phoenix,
the proximity of first -class hotels,
and the chance to visit Arizona's
sights and entertainment areas
should attract a sizeable attendance
this year," Reilley commented.
Official convention hotels are the
Adams and the Hyatt Regency.
NAMA will handle reserva tions
through its own Housing Bureau at 7
S . Dearborn St. , Chicago 60603 . t
