Bally pushes up opening date
Bally Manufacturing, which had
been planning to open its casino-
hotel in mid-1980, has pushed up
the opening date to mid-1979.
According to William T. O'Don-
nell, president and chairman of the
firm , Bally will renovate its Dennis
Hotel property on the Boardwalk in
Atlantic City, New Jersey and will
supplement that with new construc-
tion . "This," said O'Donnell, "will
permit Bally to proceed prior to a
determination on demolition of the
entire riine-acre Bally property on the
Boardwalk in Atlantic City .
The company intends to begin
renovation and construction prior to
obtaining the required license to
operate the facility .
According to O'Donnell , "Bally
has not abandoned its master plan to
construct a 1500-room casino-hotel
for the long-range development of its
Atlantic City properties, including the
Dennis and Marlborough-Blenheim
Hotels."
O'Donnell explained that demoli-
tion and new construction in certain
New Jersey coastal areas , including
Atlantic City, requires a permit from

the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection, which ad-
ministers the New Jersey Coastal
Area Facilities Review Act ("CAF-
RA") . This past March, the Depart-
ment of Environmental Protection
advised Bally that, because of the
potential historical significance of one
or more of the existing hotels on its
property , Bally would be required to
justify any demolition of such
buildings. In April , Bally submitted to
the Department of Environmental
Protection a comprehensive study
justifying demolition of the existing
hotels . A decision on that matter is
expected in September, 1978.
O'Donnell also noted, "The issue
of demolition pending before the
Department of Environmental Pro-
tection may delay the granting of
permits for the Dennis Hotel and the
rotunda tower which is part of the
Blenheim Hotel. As a result, and in
order to proceed with the construc-
tion of a casino-hotel on its properties
at the earliest possible date , the
company has modified its original
plans."
He went on to say that "the
revised plan, which will permit Bally
to commence construction of a
casino-hotel on its Atlantic City
properties at an earlier date than
originally scheduled, -contemplates
the gutting, renovation, and expan-
sion of the Dennis Hotel which will
provide 500 totally new hotel rooms
conforming to the requirements of
the New Jersey Casino Control Act
("Casino Control Act") . Under the
plan , the Marlborough Hotel and the
rear portion of the Blenheim Hotel
will be demolished . A 60,000 square
foot casino and other facilities,
including meeting, exhibition , indoor
dining, entertainment and athletic
facilities will be constructed on the
site . At the present time, the
company estimates that completion
of this facility will require capital
expenditures of approximately $45
million ."
The completion and operation of
the casino-hotel project is subject to
obtaining necessary approvals from
New Jersey casino authorities and
others and the finalization of finan-
cing arrangements.

AMOA school
requirements
Because of the great response to
its A.M. 0 . A. mechanics school
program , the A.M.O .A. has listed a
set of requirements to follow for
those who want to have such a
school in their area .
The school , which is usuaily
sponsored by the A.M.O .A. , may
also be sponsored by state associa-
tions . In that case , the state
association must mail out its own
registration forms , collect the tuition
($150 per student) , pay instructor
fees and expenses . Nothing is paid to
the A.M .O .A.
Operators who are interested in
the school but who do not have a
state association should contact the
1-312-726-2810 .
A.M.O.A.
at
These operators will probably be
asked to help find a motel where the
classes may be held and the students
housed.
One such state association which
has · chosen to sponsor the ten-day
mechanics school conducted by Don
Miller , is being held at the Holiday
Inn -International Drive in Orlando ,
Florida .
Like the A.M .O .A. school , the
F.A.M .A. school will be on schema-
tics and the fundamentals of trouble-
shooting flipper games . This school ,
according to F.A.M.A., will be the
first segment of a F.A.M.A.-spon-
sored mechanics course . The second
segment, on a school on digital
machines , will follow at a later date .
The school goes for ten consecu-
tive days from 9 a .m. to 5 p .m. each
day . Registration is limited to twenty
students .
