trend around here is "Let's go where the live
entertainment is." But then the pool tables are
playing; so it really balances itself out.
PLAY METER: I understand you have your own
record shop.
FOSHEE: I opened that up along with the business
because that way I could go next door to the record
shop and get all the newest records and listen to
them and hand-pick them for each location. No
matter how many locations you have, you cannot
put the same records in everyone and expect it to
play. Some will play one type of music, and some
will play another. I also have another office over at
my record shop that has old records. I also started
this when I first got started in the business. We
have some 45s you cannot get, but they're there in
our oldies library. That way if people request it,
why then I just have to go to my files and get it for
them. This way I keep my people happy because
they get music nobody else can provide them.
PLAY METER: So you are not that interested in
top one hundred charts?
FOSHEE: The top one hundred in the country may
not be the top one hundred here. The top ten in the
country may not even be the top ten here. You have
to give the people what they want to hear. If I left it
all to looking at the charts and trying to guess
which artists or records will play, I wouldn't know
what the records sound like. I always listen to them
and in just a few seconds I can tell you if it will play
and where it will play. After this many years I
know about what each location requires. I know

their .tastes. I know from my own personal contacts
with the locations, what type of people go in there.
PLAY METER: Do you still buy your records from
a wholesaler?
FOSHEE: Yes, but I get them cheaper. The
advantage with this record shop is that I am able to
sit down and listen to the record and say, "This will
go in such-and-such a location" and "This will play
in that location."
PLAY METER: Have you had any luck in changing
your commission arrangement?
FOSHEE: It's still fifty -fifty. I'd love to have
service charges or things like that, but I don't.
Really, the commission split should be sixty-forty
because we're not making all the money we should.
All the equipment costs are going up, and the
locations are still getting fifty percent.
PLAY METER: Are location loans much of a
problem for you?
FOSHEE: It's not like it used to be. It used to be
where the locations were al ays aft~r you for loans.
There's very little of this around here because I tell
them I'm not in the loan business. I don't want to
start it. My competition will loan money . They'll
even try to buy a location. But I'm wholeheartedly
against that because if you can buy a location,
someone else can buy it away from you. If I have to
buy a location, I don't need it. If I can't get a
location on service and equipment, then I don't
want the location. And that's what's happening
around here. They can't touch my locations because
of the service and the personal contact. The only
person who wins in a location buying battle is the
