Though we didn't vote in the
Music Operators of America's Best
Jukebox Record and Artist balloting
last mQnth , we'd like to share with
you the artists and records which
have been our favorites over the
past year and why we felt they were
good jukebox earners.
Our pick for Artist of the Year has
to be Elton John . No one in any of
the music fields dominated the
charts as he did with so many
records. He was number 64 in our
first issue's charts with a hard-
driving rocker, "The Bitch is Back. "
That was followed with a very lush
remake of the Beatie's classic "Lucy
in the Sky with Diamonds," which
spotlighted the number four slot on
the January singles charts . Both
those records hung around for quite
a while and were followed by the
disco-inspired "Philadelphia Free-
dom ." Currently on the charts is the
ballad-like "Someone Saved My
Life Tonight."
John is a prolific composer and
accomplished performer who is
capable of varied style and sounds
and a natural draw, whether he's
heard over the jukebox, over the air
or in person.
Several other artists come to

mind as runners-u p for Artist of the
Year on Jukeboxes and they are
Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings,
Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Wonder,
Olivia Newton -John and David
Bowie . Each of these artists had
more than one Top Ten single on
either the pop, rhythm & blues or
country charts through the year.
Though we don't know how
MOA arrives at a decision for best
rhythm & blues, best country or
best overall record, we were im-
pressed with the choices offered on
the voting card . • LaBelle's "Lady
Marmalade" ma y well be our favor-
ite record of the year. It certainly
fulfilled all the requirements of a
good rock'n'roll record--a raunchy
theme, raunchy vocals and raunchy
beat. Of course , there were some
heavy contenders from the pop and
country fields, like Barry Manilow's
"Mandy," Olivia Newton-John's
honky tonk jukebox classic "Please,
Mr. Please," Jessi Colter's emo-
tionally stirring ' 'I'm Not Lisa, "
Conway Twitty's " Touch the Hand"
and Freddie Fender's Tex-Mex
"Before the Next Teardrop Falls."
Deciding one record out of all the
ones we feel deserve the title

4 i'lL GO TO MY GRAVE LOVING YOU
numero unos is slightly easier. If
LaBelle doesn't rate the Record of
the Year, it certainly rates a tie with
Stevie Wonder's sensual "Boogie
on
Reggae Woman, " the Ohio
Players' "Fire" and Earth, Wind and
Fire ' s "Shinin' Starx" as Best
Rhythm & Blues Record . The return
to disco dancing by the public has
obviously affected this category.
In the country field, Linda
Ronstadt's remake of the Hank
Williams classic "I Can 't Help It"
probably ties with Freddie Fender's
"Mathilda-"Iike "Wasted Days and
Wasted Nights" for best record.
If we may, we'd like to award the
Strike A Blow for Freedom Award
to Loretta Lynn for "The PilL" Right
on , sister! John Denver's "Thank
God I'm a Country Boy" gets the
Goshdarn, It's so t;ood To Be
Loveable Award. For Most Pugilistic
Record we nominate Carl Douglas'
"Kung Fu Fighting ." And for most
Obnoxious Record -- Paperlace's
"Night Chicago Died."
Keep on spinning those records .
