Meeting the woman behind that
voice was like meeting Janis Joplin
after trying to figure out what kind of
person pushes that much out of a pair
of vocal cords.
But dimunitive, foxy Chaka Khan's
memorable voice, backed by Rufus'
rhythmic bump, is jumping out of
jukeboxes across the nation today in a
surge of popularity that started with
the Stevie Worder·penned charts trip,
per, "Tell Me Something Good,"
culled from the soulful Rags to Ru fus
album. " Y ou Got the Love" (ABC
recently on jukebox operators' most·
requested li sts.
And now, with a national tour
underway, a nE-W Rufus, featuring
Chaka Khan, stngl e is exp!!cted to
break out any day from the new
album, Rufusized. A cut from the new
Ip. "We Can Work It Out," brought a
Louisiana college audience to a
screaming roar for more recently as
Chaka strutted arOlund the stage in
what looked like a rabbit ·skin skirt
and sunflower halter top, encouraging
band members to get down by ex·
changing th.at overwhelming energy
musicians who enjoy what they're
The audience shared that energy,
spreading it in sheets like runoff over a
marsh amongst itself, then shooting it
back at Rufus and Chaka, bringing the
set to a frothing, gumbo boil. Perhaps
Chaka was helped in her cooking by
some of the homemade gumbo she
enjoyed before the show, provided by
the Nicholls State University Student
Union Board.
With performances like the Nicholls
show gaining Chaka and Rufus in·
creasing followers, jukeboxes will be
doin' the Bump to tunes like "Half
Moon" and " You Got the Love" for a
long time to come.
