The building of a piano is a mathematical art — up to a certain point. But in piano-rnaking as well
as in piano-playing, it is the overtones of genius that make the difference in quality.
The old saying, "a business is the lengthened shadow of a man," applies aptly to the Sohmer
organization. Some of the old piano makers in the factory today worked beside Hugo Sohmer him-
self. The early ideals still permeate every department. And because the Sohmer family continues to
direct the business at first hand, these ideals are never subordinated to the rush of "mass production,"
