National Music Week Set
For May 3rd to 10th
National Music Week will occur this
year from May 3rd to May 10th- The
keynote of this promotion will be "En-
rich Your Life with Music." Beginning
the first Sunday of May, it is observed
now by more than 3,000 communities.
Key participants are churches, schools,
music clubs, women's clubs, civic, rec-
reation and youth organizations who use
the occasion to further two main ob-
jectives—to stimulate year-round inter-
est in music and music education and
to advance specific local musical proj-
ects of permanent social and cultural
value. This year, many communities will
promote good music by the American
composers, aid young talent, improve
equipment for schools, churches and
recreation centers, and provide musi-
cal opportunities for servicemen.
As has been customary in the past,
many music merchants throughout the
country will put on special promotions
during this week, and the National
Association of Music Merchants will co-
operate by providing its members with a
National Music Week kit to be used
on that occasion.
G. E. Rivers, Secretary of the Na-
tional and Inter-American Music Week
Committee, at 315 Fourth Ave., New
York 10, N. Y., states that all those
interested in this project can receive
from him a printed letter to be used
to good advantage in promoting Na-
tional Music Week in various localities.
Ann Leaf Making Records
On Minshall-Esley Organ
Ann Leaf, known as the ""mighty
mite of the organ", has been making
King records of her own compositions
and arrangements, under the sponsor-
ship of the Minshall-Estey Organ Co.,
Brattleboro, Vt. '"Tambo" and "Prom
Rag" are two of the exciting new dance
tunes she recorded in WMGM's Studio
B, New York City on Tuesday, Febru-
ary 24th. "Rio-Coco", a number she
arranged and played with Ted Dale's
orchestra on the Carnation Hour, as
well as her famous rendition of "In a
Little Spanish Town", in a new Minshall
organ arrangement, are also being re-
leased by King records shortly.
Ann Leaf is best remembered for her
outstanding programs over CBS Nation-
al Network, of "Nocturne", "Midnight
Melodies", "Three Consoles" and her
own show, "Ann Leaf at the Organ".
Miss Leaf delighted audiences in solo
appearances at the Paramount Theatre
in New York and the Metropolitan in
Boston. Billy Rose engaged her to open
the Cleveland Exposition and later, by
invitation of the National Press Club
of Washington, she played for the late
President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The present generation will identify
her by her organ accompaniment on
such radio favorites as "Lorenzo Jones".
"Stella Dallas", "Front Page Farrell"
and other programs.
1952 Piano Production
1952 proved to be a much better year
than was anticipated at the beginning
of the year. The National Piano Manu-
facturers Association released figures
in January, showing that there were
153,520 new pianos shipped during the
year. In 1951 the figure was 148,289
new pianos, which shows an increase
of 5,000 instruments.
In breaking down the different kinds
of pianos, there were 4.005 grand pi-
anos shipped in 1952, which was less
than the 5,358 grand pianos shipped in
1951. According to the figures it seems
that the smaller pianos, 64 and 73-note
instruments, have been proving more
popular. In 1952 there were 2,113
shipped, while in 1951 there were only
924.

EVERY ESTEY SPINET HAS THE "VIOLIN BRIDGE"
The side coves lighten the mass of the long treble
bridge without cutting down surface areas required for
the bridge pins (top) and the soundboard (bottom).
Unnecessary in the large piano, where the weight of
th© board overcomes the inertia of the bridge, this
patented Estey feature permits greater soundboard
flexibility (vibration) in the small piano. You can hear
the difference in the Estey tone!
