Prominent Men in Music Industry
To Be Speakers at ASPT Convention
Leaders in the nation's music indus-
try will speak and participate in activi-
ties of the American Society of Piano
Technicians during its 11th annual con-
vention, Aug. 1-5, at the Hotel New
Yorker, New York City.
Piano technicians will hear Ray S.
Erlandson, president of the National
Association of Music Merchants; James
V. Sill, president of the National Piano
Association of America; and Dr. Jef-
frey O'Hara, president of the Compos-
ers and Artists Guild.
From technical clinics in action reg-
ulating and soundboard repair to Man-
hattan boat rides and Broadway shows,
the piano technicians will combine work
and play during their five-day New
York visit.
Eleven Technical Workshops
Eleven technical workshops, each of
which will run for three days, will be
initiated at the 1952 convention. Indi-
vidual subjects include tuning; upright
and spinet action regulation; grand ac-
tion regulation; tone regulation; key
recovering and rebushing; problems of
restringing and soundboard repair; re-
finishing; business promotion; shop
know-how, tools, repairs, etc.; shop
problems for the blind; and a general
technical forum.
National officers and delegates will
attend an opening Council meeting on
Thursday morning, July 31. Following
registration on Friday morning, con-
vention-goers will visit industry ex-
hibits, including those of the National
Association of Music Merchants. An
instructors and moderators meeting and
rehearsal for the ASPT orchestra will
precede lunch in the grand ballroom at
noon.
The convention's opening session will
begin at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon. Na-
tional president George Brasch, Mil-
waukee. Wis.. will preside. Royal Ryan,
executive vice president of the New
York Convention and Visitors Bureau,
will extend the official welcome for
New York City. Greetings will also be
offered by Ray S. Erlandson, President
of the National Association of Music
Merchants.
Friday night entertainment includes a
boat ride around Manhattan, leaving
42nd St. on the Hudson River at 7 p.m.
The Saturday morning program will
open with an address by James V. Sill,
president of the National Piano Associ-
ation of America, Inc. Richard Wester-
velt, New York University School of
Merchandising, will advise piano tech-

nicians on "How To Sell Your Serv-
lces .
Arthur Johnson of the Interchemical
Co. will speak on "The Application of
Varnish. Lacquer and Paints." A forum
on "Public Relations and Advertising"
will be conducted by H. Ellis Saxton,
Milwaukee, Wis. Delegates will adjourn
for lunch and return in the afternoon
for technical workshops scheduled from
1 to 3 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.
Noted composer and lecturer, Dr.
Jeffrey O'Hara. president of the Com-
posers and Artists Guild, will be the
featured speaker at the annual conven-
tion banquet Saturday night. Guest
artist at the banquet will be Thomas
Richner. former Naumburg winner and
eminent pianist from Columbia Uni-
versity.
Sunday morning and afternoon will
be devoted to church attendance, the-
aters and sightseeing. The New York
Chapter and its women's auxiliary will
be hosts at an open house in the hotel's

grand ballroom Sunday evening. Master
of Ceremonies will be Charles Sum-
mers of Wood & Brooks Co., Buffalo,
N. Y. Entertainment includes a concert
by the ASPT orchestra under the di-
rection of Henry Frank, Chicago. III.:
ukelele solo by Walter Williams, New
York; a novelty skit by Joe Daurer, ad-
vertising manager of the Wurlitzer
Company, DeKalb, III.; musical saw
solo by William Geiseler, New York;
and professional entertainment from
the New York area.
Dr. Paul Oncley, instructor in acous-
tics at Columbia University, will dis-
cuss "Musical Acoustics" at the first
Monday session. Dr. Oncley will per-
form visual demonstrations of acous-
tical principles with the aid of electron-
ic devices.
"Abrasives for the Piano Technician"
will be discussed by a representative of
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
Co., St. Paul, Minn.
After an adjournment for lunch, tech-
nical workshops will reconvene for af-
ternoon sessions. Monday night has
been designated as radio and television
night. Free tickets for New York's stu-
dio shows will be available to conven-
tioners and their families.
A demonstration of key and action
building will be conducted by F. Kelso
Davis, sales manager, and Peter Corn-
stock, vice president, Pratt, Read & Co..
Ivoryton, Conn., at the Tuesday morn-
ing meeting.
This will be followed by the execu-
tive secretary's annual report, election
of officers, the selection of the 1954
convention city, and a closing address
by the new president. Tuesday after-
noon technical workshops will again
meet until 5 p.m.
Post convention trips to piano fac-
tories in the New York vicinity will be
conducted on Wednesday morning, Au-
gust 6th. Piano technicians will have
their choice of a visit to Pratt, Read &

Plan for Big Philadelphia Convention
The National Association of Piano
Tuners are planning for a well-attended
Convention, to be held at the Hotel Ben-
jamin Franklin in Philadelphia, Mon-
day, July 14th to Thursday, 17th in-
clusive.
Registration will take place the morn-
ing of July 14th and in the afternoon
there will be a regulating clinic on the
acrosonic spinet by Edwin Volz, Bald-
win technician, to be followed by a
demonstration of Wood & Brooks ac-
tions by Norman Dasenbrook of the
Wood & Brooks Co.. Buffalo, N. Y.
On Monday evening there will be a
piano and vocal concert, featuring Mrs.
Estelle Ruth, pianist and teacher mem-
ber of the National Guild of Piano
Teachers and Chairman of the Summit
County Section of the Northeast Dis-
trict. Ohio Music Teachers Association.
On the same program will be Miss Elsie
Johansen of Columbia University, New
York.
On Tuesday, July 15th, John E. Kohl,
President of the association, will make
a keynote address at the morning meet-
ing which will be followed by Steinway
action regulation by Granville Ward.
Steinway technician, and voicing by
William Hupfer. also a Steinway tech-
nician.
In the afternoon, a represntative of
the Sherwin-Williams Co. will talk on
refinishing, and shop practices will be
shown in motion pictures, by R. F.
Boelter. technical editor of "The Tun-
ers Journal". In the evening, a business
meeting will be held for members only.
On Wednesday, July 16th, Joe Daur-
er. Advertising Manager of the Rudolph
Wurlitzer Co., DeKalb. 111., will talk on
"Salesmanship", F. X. Friedel, Treas-
urer of the N.A.P.T. and Membership
Chairman, will discuss "Tuners' Wel-
fare'. Richard Kamperman, President
Emeritus of N.A.P.T., will give a dem-
onstration of touch laying and regulat-
ing, and there will be an afternoon tour
through the Otto R. Trefz Piano Supply
House. Another business meeting will
be held in the evening for members
only.
The members will take a sightseeing
trip to Philadelphia after continuation
of technical classes in the morning of
Thursday, July 17th, and in the after-
noon will take a tour through the Les-
ter Piano Manufacturing Co. plant at
Lester, Pa. The banquet will be held
that evening.
