Steinway Executives Pleased With
Progress in Hamburg and London
After spending five weeks in Ger-
many and England, Roman de Majew-
ski, Director of Sales of Steinway &
Sons, New York; E. B. Orcutt, Comp-
troller, and Frederick Steinway re-
turned to New York on May 13th. Ac-

exception of the United States. It was
interesting to note that the piano de-
mand in all countries has increased per-
ceptibly, and we are supplying the vari-
ous countries, as we are the largest

cording to Mr. de Majewski, the trip
was made particularly for contact pur-
poses, since no one had visited the
Hamburg plant or the London office
since the trip which was made by him
fifteen months ago.
According to Mr. de Majewski, a
marked progress and improvement of
conditions was found both in Hamburg
and London. "In Hamburg," he said
"the production of grands and vertical
pianos is being steadily increased. It's
from the Hamburg plant that the Stein-
way pianos are sold in practically every
manufacturers of high-grade pianos in
Europe."
"We were particularly pleased with
the activities at the Hamburg plant
which has now been entirely renovated
and put into first-class operating condi-
tion, and is under the capable manage-
ment of Theodor Ehrlic. I found, and
was very pleased to note, that the staff
in the factory, in both the export and
wholesale departments as well as in the
retail establishment, are of extremely
high quality and each member is very
enthusiastic over the progress which is
now being made." Besides completely
renovating this Hamburg plant, which
was established in 1881, thirty years aft-
er the New York factory was estab-
lished, an addition to the factory has
been completed during the last two
years.
"Of course," continued Mr. de Ma-
jewski, "in London our operations are
entirely retail, where we maintain an
attractive retail store in the heart of
Mayfair, which is ably managed by Ed-
win G. Horwood. We were particularly
impressed by the fact that 20 of the 65
employees in this London establishment
range in ages from 18 to 25, manifest-
ing that the younger generation is tak-
ing a genuine interest in the piano busi-
ness in England."
The Steinway trio sailed from New
York on the S. S. He de France, but Mr.
Orcutt and Mr. Steinway returned on
the S. S. Queen Mary. Mr. de Majewski
however, remained five days longer, but
flew to New York but arrived forty-two
minutes ahead of his associates.
Baldwin's President Wulsin
Featured in Fortune
The May, 1952 issue of "Fortune"
published a picture of Lucien Wulsin,
President of the Baldwin Piano Co.,
which was taken in the inspection room
of the Baldwin plant, underneath which
appeared a caption stating in part.
"Lucien Wulsin is President of the
Baldwin Co., whose pianos are favored
by some of the finest concert pianists
and conductors in the world. Mr. Wul-
son, educated as an engineer, is an ex-
pert in acoustics and is a patron of
Cincinnati's justly famous musical arts."
