sixths and tenths to the thirds, includ-
ing a check-up with minor sixths that
will help us to make use of some aug-
mented chords, necessary for enharmon-
ic comparisons.
In order to understand this form of
tuning, one should at least have passed
the- initiatory stage, i.e., how to tune a
circle of fifths and octaves absolutely
true, no sign of beats whatsoever. This
takes plenty of hard practice. Unless
you adhere to this form of procedure,
you may lose the idea of what it is all
about.
Be Patient
A good many students starting out to
something new get too ambitious from
the start. They cannot wait until they
have mastered one thing at a time, and
do it well.
Tuning a circle of fifths and octaves
may seem rather elementary at first. Do
not let this primary procedure discour-
age you because this must be mastered.
The next progressive step I would
suggest (that is, if I were a beginner)
is to go to a well-tuned piano and listen
attentively to the chords.
First sound the interval of a perfect
fifth—as C = G, D = A, E = B, F = C,
G=D,
A = E.
Then sound C# = G#. D# = A#,
E# = B#, F#=C#, G# = D#, A#=E#.
O—G b D b —A b E b —B h F b —C b
G*>—D b A b —E b .
Note: When you know all your na-
tural intervals perfectly, it is easy to
figure out any interval; look at the per-
fect fifths—the others are perfect fifth
raised and lowered the same distance.
Second—Study as well as hear:
the major thirds C-E F-A G-B
the minor thirds C-E b F-A b G-B b
also minor thirds C#-E F#A G# b
Note: The first column are all major
thirds, second column lowered half step
—we have simply made the major into
minor by making them smaller.
A Triad
Returning to our chords, it should be
explained that they must have at least
three different tones and are made up
of chains of interlocking thirds. The
size, number and position of the thirds
decide the chord's quality: major, min-
or, diminished and so on.
A triad is a three-tone chord.
Please do memorize the chords. Ac-
quaint your ear with their quality. Note
the difference between the major and
minor thirds. That's all for now.
