NAMM Directors Suggest Sales Tax;
Committee To Confer With Officials
T
HE annual mid-year meeting of the
Officers and Board of Directors of
National Association of Music Mer-
chants took place at the Hotel Statler in

Washington, D. C, February 6th and
7th. Two full days were required to
iron out the problems which came before
this body, and it was not until 5:30 on
February 7th that the meeting adjourned.
The Board voted to go on record as
favoring a retail sales tax in place of
any increased manufacturers' excise
taxes, and will make its position known
to the Taxation Committee of the Amer-
ican Retail Federation of which the
National Association of Music Mer-
chants is a member. The American Re-
tail Federation will express the views of
the entire retail industry in its presenta-
tion before the House Ways and Means
Committee, which will, within the near
future, take up the subject of new tax
revenues.
The Board also appointed a commit-

of this committee is E. R. McDuff, Presi-
dent of Grinnell Bros., Detroit, Mich.;
Earl Campbell, President of Campbell
Music Co., Washington, D. C, and
Clarence M. Pettit, Vice-President of the
American Piano Corp., New York, are
the other members.
Cancel Regional Meetings
It was voted to cancel the regional
conferences which have been scheduled
for San Francisco in February, and St.
Louis in March, due to the insufficient
interest which has been shown some of
those which were carried out in the past.
It was decided to hold the 1951 ban-
quet during the coming convention, on
the night of Wednesday, July 18th, at
the Stevens Hotel in Chicago. This deci-
sion was made due to the inability of
July 16th to 19th inclusive, and they also
decided that the 1952 convention, which
is scheduled for New York City, July
28th to. 31st inclusive, will be held at
the Hotel New Yorker and the banquet
will be held on Thursday night, July
31st, at the Waldorf-Astoria.
To Increase Dues Classifications
It was proposed to submit to the mem-
bers an amendment to the constitution
to increase the number of dues classifica-
tions from the present 8 to 13. The rea-
son for the proposed change is to attain
more uniformity in membership dues
rates. To handle the dues classification
changes and other matters, the following
Bylaws committee was appointed: Wil-
liam H. Beasley, Chairman; W. Perry
Chrisler, and Paul W. Jenkins.
