New Banjo and Drum Books
Ludwig & Ludwig's latest publication is a
new and clever presentation of a simplified form
of banjo playing. It is called, "A Short-Cut
Method," and is written by John P. Hamilton,
noted banjo soloist, recording and radio spe-
cialist, who is a member of the banjo staff of
Ludwig & Ludwig, Chicago. Profusely illus-
trated by cuts and tables showing the relative
that is thus saved more than offsets the cost
of the census itself.
Other dealers in musical instruments might
well take a leaf from the Squier book and make
a census of their territories that would give
them real information regarding the people to
whom they would sell.

Manufacturers Meet
A meeting of the Musical Merchandise Manu-
facturers Association (Eastern District) was
held early in November at the offices of the
Music Industries Chamber of Commerce in
New York, at which time a report of the pro-
ceedings of the meeting of the National Asso-
ciation of Musical Instrument and Accessories
Manufacturers held in Buffalo in October was
reviewed and discussed.
Particular interest was displayed in the sug-
gestion that the two' local associations in the
New York and Chicago districts co-operate
more closely in their work with a view to mak-
ing it more effective nationally. A committee
of the National Association is now working
on a plan to make joint action of the two asso-
ciations more easily possible.
Harry Meixell, general manager of the Music
Industries Chamber of Commerce, and Kenneth
S. Clark of the National Bureau for the Ad-
vancement of Musk, attended the meeting and
told what the Chamber and the Bureau were
doing in connection with promotional work
in the public schools designed to bring about
greater participation of pupils in the group
playing of fretted instruments. The association
members were much impressed with the prog-
ress made and resolved to devote the greater
part of the organization revenues to the carry-
ing on of the work. A substantial sum was voted
at once and the other associations were advised
of the action and urged to strengthen their sup-
port of the movement.

Ludwig's experiences as a practical drummer
through many years, and answers the questions
which his hojise most frequently receives from
bandmasters, teachers and students of per-
cussion instruments. It describes every instru-
ment in the percussion section and explains
simply and very clearly the correct methods of
playing.
It is not called an instruction book but it is
so fine and complete a help to the man or boy
who is studying the drum that its close perusal
will be of marked help to anyone who has the
slightest aptitude for these stirring instruments.

valuable mass of information regarding those
people of the community who were to be
classed not only as music lovers, but as music
performers. In fact, every name on the pros-
pect list was, and is, live, a fact proven by the
excellent volume of business that has been done
with these prospects by the company.
