"Down South" Used in
Trans-Atlantic Broadcast
Marks Number Played in Experimental Work
by the General Electrical Co., Schenectady,
N. Y.
The spotlight of popular attention was again
focused on Myddleton's "Down South" a few
days ago, when a phonograph recording of that
number was utilized by the General Electric
Co., Schenectady, in an experiment in two-
way radio communication between the United
States and England. The experiment received
front-page notices in several metropolitan news-
papers, and the story of this event was sent
out by the press associations to practically
every large city in the country, judging from
the clippings being received by the Ed. B.
Marks Music Co., New York, publisher of the
song.
The accounts of the experiment stated that,
following a short conversation between Eng-
lish and American engineers, the latter appro-
priately selected a phonograph recording of
"Down South," which was composed by Mr.
Myddleton, when he was a British subject, al-
though referring to our own South. The music
was transmitted to Chelmsford, England, over
the short-wave station at Schenectady, and
then rebroadcast back to the United States.
Here it was picked up and "put on the air" by
Station WGY at Schenectady and heard all
through the East by radio listeners informed
about the experiment.
days with his folks in Chicago. Mr Sklare
reports that "Who Knows" and "Cobble
Stones" are still in big demand in his district,
and among the new numbers that are destined
to become big sellers he names "Keep Sweep-
ing the Cobwebs Off the Moon," "In a Sing
Song Sycamore Tree," "You Got to Be Good to
Me," and the lovely waltz song "Auf Wicder-
sehn."

"Little Mother," by Erno Rapee and Lew Pol-
lack, Theme Song in Film of Same Name
Which Opened February 13
Erno Rapee and Lew Pollack, writers of
"Charmaine" and "Diane," have given Sherman
Clay & Co., San Francisco, another waltz song,
entitled "Little Mother (Mutterchen)," which
is the theme song for William Fox's new
motion picture feature, "Four Sons," that opened
at the Gaiety Theatre in New York on Monday
evening, February 13. It is a John Ford pro-
duction, in which Miss Mann, sixty years of age,
is elevated to the position of star, after more
than ten years as an obscure extra. In this
picture she plays the role of the German mother,
three of whose sons die for the Fatherland, the
fourth fighting in the American Army. The
song, "Little Mother (Mutterchen)" is movie-
toned throughout the production and looks like
another big hit for Sherman, Clay & Co.

New Berlin Number
Heard in New York
The latest contribution of Irving Berlin to
the publishing firm bearing his name is "Sun-
shine," and was written by the popular com-
poser while he was visiting in California. The
number was introduced in New York recently
at the Roxy Theatre, where it received an en-
thusiastic welcome. The catalog of Irving
Berlin, Inc., is now a strong one, with such
popular numbers a s : "Four Walls," by Billy
Rose, Dave Dreyer and Al Jolson; "Back in
Your Own Back Yard," by the same writers;
"Havin' My Ups and Downs," by Peter De
Rose; "Mary Ann," by Benny Davis and Abner
Silver, and several others.
Publishers Get Decrees
for Copyright Violations
BUFFALO, N. Y., February 27.—Two decrees
against Buffalo district resorts for violation of
song copyrights to the extent of $138.40 each
have been filed in favor of Shapiro-Bernstein,
Inc., and Leo Feist, Inc. One is against the
Rendezvous, Buffalo, for infringement of "Side
by Side" and the other is against Oscar's Place
at Greenhurst for using "Sundown" in violation
of copyright. Four other complaints of similar
nature were entered at Buffalo.
Von Tilzer Songs on Records
Harry Von Tilzer, proprietor of the publish-
ing house bearing his name, reports that record-
ings of several of his former hits are being
made by the leading record companies. Among
the old-time favorites to be released in new
form with new arrangements are "Cubanola
Glide," "When the Harvest Moon Is Shining"
and "Last Night Was the End of the World."
a popular catalog that is stronger than any the
company has had thus far. The three leaders
are, of course, "Among My Souvenirs," "To-
gether" and "Henry Made a Lady Out of
Lizzie," all of which arc being used nationally
by the entertainment world at large. Sheet
music copies of these songs are selling on a
hit basis, and they have been recorded at least
100 per cent mechanically.
"Together," the latest product of the trio,
represented in the name of the firm, has just
been recorded three ways by Victor,—as a vocal
solo by Frank Bauer, a dance recording by
Fred Waring's orchestra, and a concert record
by Paul Whiteman and his orchestra. A special
dance arrangement of "One More Night" by
Frank Skinner has been released and is proving
highly popular with the large orchestras. Slide
presentations of "Tin Pan Parade" and several
other numbers are proving popular with motion
picture organists throughout the country, and
the results of this campaign are being reflected
consistently in dealer sales.
Recently, an intensive campaign in Jackson-
ville, Fla., on "Henry Made a Lady Out of
Lizzie," brought the song to the attention of
everybody, when the Royal Motor Co., local
Ford dealers arranged a special parade with a
huge wooden record mounted on one of the
new Fords. The stunt was arranged by Charles
S. Morrison, manager of the Arcade Theatre,

Klepper Has Good Trip
Paul Klepper, traveling representative of the
Ed. B. Marks Music Co., New York, in the
East, returned recently from a short trip to
Boston, where he reports generally good con-
ditions among the jobbers and the large dealers.
Mr. Klepper, who is also manager of the com-
pany's standard and foreign music departments,
states that this end of the catalog is good.
