Wendling, well-known hit writers, have pro-
duced in "Starlight and Tulips" a melody
classis which lent itself readily to Jesse Craw-
ford's master hands. He first introduced it in
ballad style, then in waltz clog rhythm, fol-
lowed by his playing of the melody in an
Oriental manner, and then as a resounding
Sousa conception. The lyrics were then thrown
on the screen as Mr. Crawford returned to the
melody of "Starlight and Tulips" in its simpli-
fied form.
Near the close of the presentation a further
dramatic touch was added by the lighting effects
arranged for the occasion. The house grew dim
preceding the closing chorus and, as the organ-
ist entered into the final strains of the melody,
colored lights were thrown on the organ and
twinkling stars were also visible. When the
lighting effects reached their height, a massed
bed of "starlights and tulips" was seen. This
animated version of the song brought forth
applause, calling for repeated acknowledgment
on the part of the organist. It was one of the
most applauded numbers upon the program.

"Down South" Used in
Trans-Atlantic Broadcast
Marks Number Played in Experimental Work
by the General Electrical Co., Schenectady,
N. Y.
The spotlight of popular attention was again
focused on Myddleton's "Down South" a few
days ago, when a phonograph recording of that
number was utilized by the General Electric
Co., Schenectady, in an experiment in two-
way radio communication between the United
States and England. The experiment received
front-page notices in several metropolitan news-
papers, and the story of this event was sent
out by the press associations to practically
every large city in the country, judging from
the clippings being received by the Ed. B.
Marks Music Co., New York, publisher of the
song.
The accounts of the experiment stated that,
following a short conversation between Eng-
lish and American engineers, the latter appro-
priately selected a phonograph recording of
"Down South," which was composed by Mr.
Myddleton, when he was a British subject, al-
though referring to our own South. The music
was transmitted to Chelmsford, England, over
the short-wave station at Schenectady, and
then rebroadcast back to the United States.
Here it was picked up and "put on the air" by
Station WGY at Schenectady and heard all
through the East by radio listeners informed
about the experiment.
days with his folks in Chicago. Mr Sklare
reports that "Who Knows" and "Cobble
Stones" are still in big demand in his district,
and among the new numbers that are destined
to become big sellers he names "Keep Sweep-
ing the Cobwebs Off the Moon," "In a Sing
Song Sycamore Tree," "You Got to Be Good to
Me," and the lovely waltz song "Auf Wicder-
sehn."

"Little Mother," by Erno Rapee and Lew Pol-

Which Opened February 13
Erno Rapee and Lew Pollack, writers of
"Charmaine" and "Diane," have given Sherman
Clay & Co., San Francisco, another waltz song,
entitled "Little Mother (Mutterchen)," which
is the theme song for William Fox's new
motion picture feature, "Four Sons," that opened
at the Gaiety Theatre in New York on Monday
evening, February 13. It is a John Ford pro-
duction, in which Miss Mann, sixty years of age,
is elevated to the position of star, after more
than ten years as an obscure extra. In this
picture she plays the role of the German mother,
three of whose sons die for the Fatherland, the
fourth fighting in the American Army. The
song, "Little Mother (Mutterchen)" is movie-
toned throughout the production and looks like
another big hit for Sherman, Clay & Co.
