" US1C
Scandals" production, scheduled for an opening
early this Summer, has been completed and will
be released in sheet music form and orchestra-
tions prior to the New York premiere. The
music is written by the three writer proprietors
of the publishing firm, B. D. De Sylva, Lou
Brown and Ray Henderson, who are responsible
for more than a score of hits since the firm
started business about eighteen months ago.
It is interesting to note that although this
trio has written music for the "Scandals" be-
fore, this is the first time that the firm has pub-
lished it as well. Some of the hits of the last
George White Scandals, issued before the firm
was organized, included such numbers as "Black
Bottom," "This Is My Lucky Day" and "The
Birth of the Blues." De Sylva, Brown &
Henderson, Inc., are not without experience in
publishing show music, however, as they pro-
duced and issued half a dozen big sellers in
the collegiate musical comedy, "Good News."

Julius P. Witmark
Back From Conference
New York Publisher Heard Many Witmark
Numbers Featured While on Visit to Chicago
Julius P. Witmark, of M. Witmark &
Sons, New York, has just returned from Chi-
cago, where he attended the first biennial of
the Music Supervisors' National Conference, ac-
companied by Mrs. Witmark. This was Mr.
Witmark's first trip to Chicago in a number
of years and he put in a busy two weeks re-
newing old business acquaintances and per-
sonally interviewing prominent members of the
music trades there. He also found time to visit
the leading motion picture and vaudeville
houses and found many of the orchestra leaders
featuring Witmark songs in their regular pres-
entations. Among those visited was Paul Ash,
playing with his orchestra at the Oriental
Theatre, who was featuring "I'm Away From
the World, When I'm Away From You." Mr.
Witmark heard Mark Fisher and his orchestra
do the number, "There's Always a Way to Re-
member," and also heard Victor Herbert's
"Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life" played in dozens
of places.
The primary object of his visit was, of
course, the music supervisors' conference,
which took up the greater share of his time.

The Music Trade Review
Julius P. Witmark
Mr. Witmark is more than ordinarily interested
in music instruction in the schools, and it is
due to his untiring efforts that the Witmark
firm possesses to-day one of the most interest-
ing and varied catalogs of music material for
school use in existence. "A World of Good
Things for Schools and Colleges" is the title
of this catalog of Witmark teaching material,
now so thoroughly familiar to every music su-
pervisor in the country. The principal contents
of this catalog were on display in the Witmark
exhibit at the Hotel Stevens, headquarters of
the convention.
Mr. Witmark received a great thrill with the
singing of two of the Witmark firm's choral
publications at two functions in connection with
the conference. The first was Richard Kountz's
"American Ode," which closed the program pre-
sented at the first annual Chicago High Schools
Music Festival in Orchestra Hall. This was
sung by 500 students, accompanied by an or-
chestra of one hundred pieces, conducted by
Ray Staater with Noble Cain at the organ. The
second featured Witmark publication was the
same composer's "The Song of Man," written
especially for the occasion and dedicated to
the founders of the conference. It was sung at
the Founders' Breakfast by 125 supervisors
selected and directed by Dr. Will Earhart.
Five Songs Serve as
Text for Sermon
SYRACUSE, N. Y., April 28.—-Something of a
sensation in novel sermons was created lure
last Sunday, when Rev. Bernard C. Clausen,
pastor of the First Baptist Church, drew his
text from five late popular songs. Rev. Clausen
went on record as saying that "the writers of
'My Blue Heaven' and 'Baby Feet Go Fitter
Patter' have done more to glorify the simple
home than all the millions of sermons which
have been delivered from the pulpits of Chris-
tian churches."
He preached on what he nominated as the
year's best five song sellers, "My Blue Heaven,"
"Baby Feet Go Fitter Patter," "Among My
Souvenirs," "The Song Is Ended" and "Let a
Smile Be Your Umbrella." As the minister
discussed each number, Prof. Harry Hibbard
played the song refrain on the church organ.
