The Paramount Banjo Is Showing a
Remarkable Growth in Foreign Markets
J. P. Grant, General Manager for Wm. L. Lange, Manufacturer of This Well-Known
Instrument, Tells of Increasing Foreign Demand

•*• kcts has shown remarkable growth in
acceptance as the premier banjo, even in re-
mote parts of the world," is the statement of
J. P. Grant, general manager for Wm. L.
Lange, New York, who says: "Recent sales
of these instruments for export shipment in-
dicate the readiness with which the Paramount
is adopted by the professionals when it is
introduced into a new market. Last Fall a
new distributing agency was arranged for
South Africa and we have a letter from them
giving the report on the sale of the first lot
of Paramount banjos shipped out, in a virgin
market for Paramounts, where a few other
American instruments and many foreign-made
banjos previously predominated. Here is what
they say:
" 'We beg to inform you that we are sending
an order for the Challenger tenor outfit. We
are now able to tell you that we have disposed
of the first lot of Paramount banjos very sat-
isfactorily.

Koch Piano Accordion
Instruction Book Out
Volume Is One of the Most Complete of Its
Type in This Field—An Analysis of Its
Contents
One of the most highly successful piano
accordion instruction books ever put on the
market is the new publication recently issued
by Koch Harmonica, Inc., distributor of Koch
harmonicas and accordions, 23 East Twenty-
first street, New York City.
The book covers in a very thorough fashion
such important subjects as: "The Rudiments
of Music" with complete charts and scales;
"How to Hold the Piano Accordion"; "The
Hands"; "The Bellows"; "The Keys"; "Key-
board for the Right Hand Together With Full
Page Chart"; "Scales and Exercises for the
Right Hand"; "Easy Old Time Melodies for the
Right Hand Only."
Seven charts are given in the book which
describe the bass and chord keys for left-hand
fingering, including charts for instruments from
twelve bass up to 120 bass, and another space
is devoted to the left-hand fingering of basses
and chords. Another page covers exercises for
the left hand. The music section of the book is
most complete, containing in all fifty-five popu-
lar selections.
This book has already received the enthus-
iastic approval of accordion players and music
dealers.
Africa, we sold a style Leader tenor. To Bert
King, finest solo banjoist now of the Arcade
Tea Room, another Paramount tenor; to Mr.
Bloemputen, a four-string long-neck Para-
mount; to Taffy Bevan, banjoist in Adder's
Third Orchestra, a Paramount tenor. To the
banjoist of Mr. Nichles, Aeolian Band Victoria,
a Paramount five-string, and several of the
banjo-ukes were sold to visiting professional
artists who have been playing out in Africa.
" 'All players are highly delighted and prob-
ably will be the means of advertising these
instruments in England, as well as South Af-
rica.
" 'Gene Pingitore, brother of Michael Pingi-
tore, of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, who was
out here, did much to boost the Paramount
during his visit. He is a very fine chap and
we got on exceptionally well.'
"Exclusive arrangements have recently been
entered into," continued Mr. Grant, "with a
very large distributor, who will take over the
territory of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Poland
and central European countries. This involves
large shipments of instruments, which will
keep us going at capacity for some time, com-
bined with the normal domestic business."

York Broadcasting Series
of Brass Music Programs
Fanfare Four, Walter Dellers, Professional
Coach, and J. H. Grantham, Saxophone So-
loist, in Programs
CHICAGO, I I I , March 19.—An unusual array of
musical talent is broadcasting the series of
high-class recitals of brass ensemble music over
Station WBBM, Chicago, sponsored by the
York Band Instrument Co. of Grand Rapids,
Mich.
The series of recitals started on the evenings
of March 6 and 13 and continue on the evenings
of Marcli 20 and 27, and no doubt it will be
a stimulant to band instrument sales because
of the quality of the programs and the excel-
lent musical talent that has been selected.
The recitals through an extensive advertising
program launched by the York Band Instru-
ment Co will no doubt attract tremendous
audiences, and as an effective tie-up aid to
dealers the company has issued window signs
carrying the announcement and the series of
programs.
In addition to the broadcasting by the brass
quartet, the Fanfare Four, the company also
announces that Walter Dellers, the well-known
professional coach, and J. Howard Grantham,
saxophone soloist, will have a part in the pro-
grams.
The Fanfare Four is a little group of sin-
cere artists that represent a development which
merits the attention of good musicians every-
where. Modeled after the string quartet, its
object is to demonstrate the practicability of

tional demonstrations and on the concert stage.
They have made their own transcriptions and
arrangements and have added interest in the
form of a short "fanfare" played before each
rendition, based upon some major theme in
the composition which follows.
The work of this organization exhibits a
finesse, precision and insight that transcends
ordinary band or orchestra requirements, which
is not often met with even in symphonic
organizations. Harry L. Jacobs, first trumpet,
is a soloist of note and an outstanding instruc-
tor. The Gault Brothers, who complete the
ensemble, George C, Hugh E. and Frank L.,
have enjoyed wide professional experience and
are associated with the Dixie Music House of
Chicago.
Mr. Dellers has trained many prominent mu-
sicians of the better-known orchestras in har-
mony, counterpoint, orchestration and impro-
visation. His work covers a great many fields
of musical endeavor, including teaching, play-
ing, conducting and composing.
J. Howard Grantham is a saxophone soloist
with the well-known Paul Ash's Orchestra
playing at the Oriental Theatre.
"In addition to the high caliber of the artists
and the programs which have been carefully
selected in keeping with the quality that dis-
tinguishes the York name," said Karl B. Shink-
man, sales manager, in making the latest an-
nouncement, "we have also arranged another
interesting feature for the large audience which
the program draws.
four brass instruments can be used and should
prove a big attraction to brass instrument
players.
"In fact the entire series of programs have
been carefully planned to be a substantial help
to dealers in creating band instrument sales,
and offer the dealer excellent tie-up possibilities
in advertising the programs in his immediate
vicinity. The programs emphasize the care that
has been taken to have them bear the stamp
of quality that marks the York name."
The series is an outstanding event in broad-
casting.
