A comprehensive program is being planned
for the meeting, with speakers of national im-

country, is expected to be one of the things
accomplished at the meeting.
A full delegation will come from the West
Coast, according to word received here, and
plans are being made for a record attendance.
The program has been tentatively outlined as
follows:

12:15 followed by a reception for the members
and board of directors. The business session

for the first evening. Sessions will be closed
on the second day with a big stag banquet.
Unpaid Equities in Instalment Sales
Subject of Test Case on Federal Taxes
Court Has Already Held That Income Taxes Can Not Be Collected on Payments in
Instalment Sales Which Have Not Been Made by Purchasers
VyASHINGTON, D. C, January 2.—The re-
funding of taxes amounting to millions of
dollars to merchants doing business on the in-
stalment plan depends upon the outcome of a
court case now pending, in which the Govern-
ment has appealed from a decision which, if up-
held, would completely reverse the attitude of
the Commissioner of Internal Revenue with re-
spect to taxes on instalment sales.
The pending case involves a jewelry company
which, during the period from 1918 to 1924, sold
jewelry on conditional sales contracts at agreed
prices amounting to more than $70,000. After
receiving about $50,000 on the contract prices,
the company treated the title as vested in the
purchasers and closed the accounts by charging
off the balance as uncollectible. The Commis-
sioner of Internal Revenue, in accordance with
his interpretation of the sales, taxed on the en-
j tire amount of the selling price agreed upon,
• but the company contended that it was liable
.only on the amount actually received.
The lower court gave judgment for the com-
pany on the ground that the tax was not due
until the sales were completed as agreed by full
payment or by relinquishment of the title to
the vendee and that only the amount actually
received by the vendor was taxable. The Gov-
ernment has appealed to the Circuit Court • of
Appeals where the case will shortly come up
for decision.

Mehlin pianos will be used in the chain of

been opened is a new million dollar structure
recently built in Beaumont, and the accompany-

Prominent Purchasers of
Marshall & Wendell Pianos
Among prominent purchasers of Marshall &
Wendell instruments at Chickering Hall during
the holiday season were Philip Manville, Jr.,
G. F. Abendschein, secretary of the Staib-
Abendschein Co., New York, returned last
week from a trip through the West, where he
visited many Western manufacturers and se-
cured some good orders for Staib-Abendschein
grand and upright piano actions.
To The Review Mr. Abendschein stated this
week: "This was my initial trip through the
West, and I greatly appreciated the splendid
reception I received all along the line. Great
interest is manifested in the Staib-Abendschein
actions, particularly our lost motion grand ac-
tion. Although my visit was a little early tW
some of the manufacturers who were busy tak
ing inventory, nevertheless I secured some good
orders and feel certain that others will be forth-
coming when manufacturers' requirements are
ascertained.
"Another feature of our actions,' which is ex-
clusive with us, is the dampproofing process
which renders the main centers impervious to
climatic changes.
"I found a note of optimism everywhere I
went, and manufacturers all feel that the New
Year will show better business for the piano in-
dustry.
"We arc now making several improvements
at the plant which will prove most beneficial
from a production standpoint as soon as they
arc completed."
