Wiemamn Reports Heavy
Demand for Marks Hits
Bill Wiemann, sales manager of the Edward
B. Marks Music Co., New York, returned re-
cently from his first important trip of the new
season. He had left about August 1 and was
gone in all about fourteen weeks, during which
he eclipsed not only his own previous records
for volume and variety of sales, but also those
made by other salesmen of the "House of
Hits." Mr. Wiemann's natural selling person-
ality and the standard of prestige and reliability
of the Marks house contributed strongly to his
success. The concern's present catalog of pop-
ular numbers also figured strongly in making
his trip an eventful one.
Mr. Wiemann found that with the release
of the Gene Goldkctte Victor record of "Slow
River," as well as the two splendid Columbia
recordings of this song by the Singing Sopho-
mores (Revelers) and Gerald Marks' Orchestra,
the sales of this clever drag tune have taken
a jump. At the same time it was noticed that
the waltz from "The Spider" entitled "A Kiss
Before the Dawn" is showing up well and
toward the latter part of his trip he sold thou-
sands of copies of this number. But the sur-
prise of his entire trip was "Down South,"
which has come along rapidly. Mr. Wiemann
found the demand for this song constantly
growing and sold plenty of each of the twenty-
odd arrangements now published of it. The
new fox-trot version, with the orchestration
by W. C. Polla, was, of course, the feature
item.
Haydn Wins Election
on Music Platform
SAN FRANCISCO, CAL,, November 12.—In one of
the most bitterly contested municipal elections
that San Francisco has known for years, Super-
visor J. Emmet Haydn, chairman of the
Municipal Auditorium, ran for re-election on
the program of having been the Father of San
Francisco's Municipal Music. The music mer-
chants and others interested in Music Week
and other municipal musical events got behind
Haydn. The election was on Tuesday, Novem-
ber 8, and Haydn was one of the supervisors
elected, while many other would-be supervisors
went down to defeat. Evidently it is a good
slogan for a man in politics to be able to say,
with truth, that he has fostered municipal
music. A lot of other things that had been
fostered by politicians turned and bit them
at the polls last Tuesday.
Broder Finds Business
Good in New Location
SAN FRANCISCO, CAI.., November 10.—John P.
Broder, well-known sheet music dealer, con-
tinues to be pleased with the new downtown
store of the Union Music Co., Mason street, a
few doors from Market. Business is much bet-
ter than in the former location, where Mr.
Broder was also 'with the Union Music Co.
There are several new songs which arc doing
a good deal to help sales. These new favorites

"'Long About June"
Making Big Success
New Number Published by Frederick K. Steele
Widely Featured by Orchestras and Recorded
as Well
The present success of the number, "'Long
About June" vindicates the judgment of Fred
crick K. Steele, president of the New York
publishing linn bearing his name, as to the
proper handling of the song. This number, com-
posed by Billy Heagney, of the Steele stalT, was
originally put out as a Summer song. The re-
sponse was so general, that Mr. Steele deter-
mined to reserve it until the Fall, in order to
reach a larger market.
In the meantime such big orchestras as Ben
Bernie's and Vincent Lope/' and others began
playing the number regularly and toward the
end of the Summer the song was recorded by
most of the big mechanicals. This has brought
the Steele firm to the peak of its campaign with
the number at the present time, and dance or-
chestration copies have just been released to
meet the general demand.

Minn., and dealers in that section are ordering
it in lots of 500. "Blue Baby" is also enjoying
a good demand and promises to do even more
in another month or two.
Reviewing general conditions observed on his
trip, Mr. Prager stated that he would char-
acterize retail demand as quite normal through-
out the West and Middle West. He attributed
the success of the Robbins popular catalog to
the firm's policy of concentrating on a few re-
leases, and these of genuine merit. The vogue
for novelties, for which the Robbins house is
now famous, is spreading and such numbers as
"A Study in Blue," "Dolly Dimples," and other
piano numbers are in big demand.
In the- course of his trip Mr. Prager ap-
pointed several new permanent territorial rep-
resentatives, as follows: Charles Yerein, Los
Angeles, who will handle the linn's business
along the Coast; E. H. Mover, at Denver, Colo.;
Jimmy Durkin in Chicago, and Ben Goldberg in
Boston.
\. I.. Sloane, another Robbins traveler, re-
turned to New York a short time ago from his
first trip of about three months in the interest
off for a month in Chicago to get in touch with
conditions there. Mr. Daniels stated that al-
though general business in the East and Middle
West is not up to par, the sheet music busi-
ness, so far as the Villa Moret catalog is con-
cerned, is doing more than holding its own.
General business in the West is excellent and
sheet music sales there are up to last year.
The firm's biggest success in the West is
"Moonlit Waters," a class fox-trot, with "Chloe"
and "An Old Guitar" following close behind.
These numbers are taking on nicely in the East
and should be well known everywhere in a few
more weeks. Mr. Daniels expects to remain
in New York until about December 1.
