There is an interesting story behind the song,
which came to light only after Mr. Steele had
accepted the song. During the World War
Amana Kalua, musician and native of Hawaii,
journeyed via the United States to France,
where he joined the famous Foreign Legion.
About the same time Clive Young, a former
fiction writer, in active service in the A. E. F.,
was transferred to the same sector of operations
as that occupied by the Foreign Legion. An
army hospital served as the meeting place of
these two soldiers-in-arms and during a period
of convalescence another song team formed
that provided many happy hours for their un-
fortunate comrades. Upon their return to the
United States the soldier-composers submitted
their song to Fred Steele, who lost no time
in issuing contracts to the writers.
