Popular "Hot" Trumpeter to Write Series of
Compositions for the Novelty Catalog of That
House Exclusively
"Red" Nichols, conceded to be one of the
greatest of "hot" trumpeters, has been signed
by the Robbins Music Corp., New York, to
write a series of compositions for its novelty
catalog. The contract calls for this artist-
composer's exclusive services for a term of
years. It is commonly said among orchestra
players that "Red" Nichols begins his "hot"
trumpet playing where the rest of the boys
leave off, and most dance musicians grant that
he has set the pace for the "hot" style of play-
ing.
At present "Red" is playing with Don Voor-
hees' Orchestra, which is frequently heard over
the new Columbia broadcasting chain. He is
also famous as a recording artist and the rec-
ords he has made for Columbia with "Red"
Nichols and His Five Little Pennies and with
his Charleston Chasers are very big sellers.

this progressive firm. "Red" has contracted to
write a series of original cornet compositions,
cornet transcriptions of the classics, a book of
instruction on cornet technic, a book of mod-
ern cornet breaks, hot choruses for cornet and
trombone in conjunction with Miff Mole, and
many other novelties for the dance cornetist.

Featured on Broadway
Feist Number Presented at Paramount, Capitol
and Strand Theatres by Different Artists
During Past Week
The distinction of receiving a triple exploita-
tion in three of the largest motion picture
houses on Broadway during the same week was
enjoyed during the week of October 23-29 by
"My Blue Heaven," the new ballad hit of Leo
Feist, Inc., New York. This striking number,
which is a worthy successor to "At Sundown"
in the firm's catalog, was featured on the pro-
grams of the Paramount, Capitol and Strand
theatres by different groups of artists. At the
Paramount "My Blue Heaven" opened the stage
presentation and was played by Ben Black and
the Paramount Stage Orchestra, with a vocal
chorus sung twice by one of the members of
the orchestra.
At the Capitol the selection was programmed
and played as an organ solo on the new Cap-
itol organ, said to be the finest organ in any
motion picture house. At the Strand the num-
ber was played by Waring's Pennsylvanians.

stantiating his confidence in the song with a
nation-wide campaign.
There is an interesting story behind the song,
which came to light only after Mr. Steele had
accepted the song. During the World War
Amana Kalua, musician and native of Hawaii,
journeyed via the United States to France,
where he joined the famous Foreign Legion.
About the same time Clive Young, a former
fiction writer, in active service in the A. E. F.,
was transferred to the same sector of operations
as that occupied by the Foreign Legion. An
army hospital served as the meeting place of
these two soldiers-in-arms and during a period
of convalescence another song team formed
that provided many happy hours for their un-
fortunate comrades. Upon their return to the
United States the soldier-composers submitted
their song to Fred Steele, who lost no time
in issuing contracts to the writers.
