Mr. Purdy occupies one-half of the handsome
store of the McDougall-Freiheit Co., small
goods dealers, and has put in a complete line
of sheet music and accessories. He knows
every twist of the sheet music business and
has practically grown up with the business with
his thirteen years of service. He stated that
the principal thing that influenced him in select-
ing his present location was the close proximity
of the store to the studios of the music teach-
ers, as he will specialize in teaching material,
school and church music. He has stocked up
with this type of material and has adopted the
slogan, "Dependable, Service—Always." Mr.
Purdy has secured as his assistants Miss Maud
McCauley and Miss Nell Harper, two of the
most experienced young women in Portland in
the sheet music game. They both have a thor-
ough knowledge of the business and were with
Mr. Purdy for the four years that he was in
charge of the Sherman, Clay & Co. department.

High Prices for Autographs
of the Great Composers
Original Manuscripts Also Go to High Bidders
at Auction Held in Berlin Recently—17,000
Marks the Record
BERLIN, GERMANY, October 10.—Enormous prices
were paid here this week at the auction of the
famous Liebeskind collection for the auto-
graphs of great composers who, during their life-
time, were barely able to earn enough money
to support themselves.
The original manuscript of Gluck's cantata,
"I Lamenti d'Amure," sold for 17,000 marks.
The first sketch of Beethoven's "Ruins of
Athens" brought 3,400 marks. Joseph Haydn's
original draft of a sonata was sold for 2,500
marks. Two receipts by Bach for 1,600 marks;
a Mozart letter dated 1783 for 1,000 marks and
Bach's manuscript of the cantata, "Where Shall
1 Flee," 9,000 marks.

Former Sherman, Clay & Co. Manager Enters
the Field on His Own Account—To Special-
ize in Teaching Music
October 5.—After being in
the sheet music business for thirteen years with
the Sherman, Clay & Co. stores in San Fran-
cisco, Oakland and Portland, W. J., or as he
is familiarly known to the trade, "Bill" Purdy
decided to start out for himself, so last April
he resigned from the Sherman, Clay & Co.
Portland branch and for the past several
months he has been visiting the music teachers,
schools, convents and conservatories of the
States of Oregon and Washington and lining
them up for his business.

McKiernan Buys Wiley
B. Allen Go. Department
SAN
JOSE, CAI.., October 5.—Joe McKiernan,
well-known local musician and songwriter, has
taken over the sheet music and small goods de-
partment of the Wiley B. Allen Co., this city,
and is operating it as Joe McKiernan's Song
Shop. This department was formerly in charge
of Henry Grobe and is distinct from the Wiley
B. Allen business, handling a wide variety of
sheet music, both popular and standard. Among
Mr. McKiernan's compositions are: "Cuban
Moon," "Don't Take Away Those Blues,"
"That's Mv Gal" and others.
Songwriters in Film
(Continued from page 35)
and other popular entertainers, for the purpose
of giving life to the presentation. A special
musical score, made up largely of hits written
by the respective song writers, has been pre-
pared for accompanying the film. "Words and
Music" should have a popular appeal both on
Broadway and in the "sticks."

Nathan Burkan Married
Nathan Burkan, a prominent New York at-
torney and counsel to the American Society of
Composers, Authors and Publishers, was mar-
ried to Miss Marienne Alexander of New York
on Saturday night, October 8, in Mr. Burkan's
apartment at 1136 Fifth avenue. The ceremony
came as a surprise to a small group of the
groom's friends, who had been invited to Mr.
Burkan's home for "a reception." Among those
present were Gene Buck, president of the Ameri-
can Society of Composers, Authors and Pub-
lishers; Al Jolson, comedian and songwriter.
and other celebrities of public and professional
life. Mr. Burkan is a specialist in litigation re-
lating to copyright, theatrical and musical mat-
ters, handling for many years practically all the
legal matters for the late Victor Herbert, as
well as representing other composers.
