Willis & Co. Hold Formal Opening of
Handsome New Building in Montreal
Prominent Canadian Concern Now Has Double Former Space in Which to Handle
Growing Business—Elaborate Program Marks Opening Ceremonies
\ / l ONTREAL, CAN., September 21.—An
event of unusual significance in the mu-
sical world of this city, and for that matter
oi Canada, was the formal opening of the new
building of Willis & Co., the ceremonies in con-
nection with which occupied Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday of this week.
The new building on St. Catherine street west,
at the corner of Drummond street, is a most
the interior of which was entirely remodeled,
while the new structure was in course of con-
struction.
A feature of the new building is a large con-
cert hall on the third floor, and another smaller
hall on the same floor for more intimate recitals.
It was in these halls that the opening cere-
monies and the concerts in connection therewith
were held, being attended by prominent guests
Secretary, and by A. P. Willis, founder and
president of Willis & Co.
On Tuesday there was a concert conference of
salesmen followed by a luncheon with a musicale
in the afternoon and a reception to the local
Kiwanis Club in the evening. On Wednesday
there was another conference of salesmen with
a musicale in the afternoon and a formal ban-
quet at the Mount Royal Hotel in the evening.
Just prior to the opening ceremonies the em-
ployes of the company were called together and
each presented with a gift of money as a mark
of appreciation for their services and their con-
tribution to the growth of the company.
Willis & Co. was established in 1871 in a small
stone building that still stands and was during
the Winter of 1775 the headquarters of Gen.
Montgomery and his officers of the Continental
Army on the occasion of their invasion of
Canada. Some years later the company moved
to Notre Dame street and in 1900 repaired to
St. Catherine street. In 1911 the new eight-
story building on St. Catherine street was built
and the new structure represents the enlarge-
ment of those warerooms.
Willis & Co. are Canadian representatives for
Wm. Knabe & Co., Chickering & Sons and the
Ampico Corp. The company has representa-
tives throughout Canada.
