Dignified Presentation of Spirituals
in Bamberger Display Increases Sales
Unusually Effective Window Treatment for the Presentation of This Class of Selec-
tion Offered by Newark, N. J. Department Store
A MOST effective display of "My Spirituals"
' * • was used recently in one of the large show
windows of the store of L. Bamberger & Co.,
Newark, N. J., doing much to boost the sales
of this attractive book in the sheet music de-
partment of the store, where an appropriate dis-
play was also set up, tying up with the window.
"My Spirituals" is a book of ninety-six pages,
published by the Robbins Music Corp., New York,
and containing a group of Negro Spirituals, com-
piled by Eva A. Jessye. Miss Jessye has col-
lected these songs at first hand, having learned
them during her childhood, and among them
are sixteen hitherto unpublished Negro spirit-
uals.
The songs portray in a beautiful manner the
mysticism and spirit-
ual fervor of the Ne-
gro, retaining always
the naivete and gay-
ety typical of the best
Negro spirituals. The
flavor of the mel-
odies has been care-
fully preserved in the
a c c o m p a n i m ents,
which in every case
will be found simple
a n d effective. "My
Spirituals" is a splen-
did example of art in
book ma n u f a c t u r e
with its text edited by
Gordon Whyte, and
music revised and ar-
ranged by Hugo Frey,
of the professional
staff of the Robbins
Music Corp.
The display given
the book in the Bam-
berger window obtained unusual emphasis
through its simplicity. There was no attempt
to crowd the window and "My Spirituals" was
the only item shown. Copies of the book were
thrown open to some of the more striking pages,

informing both the music lover and discriminat-
ing reader that here was a work to suit his taste.
The display needed no background and was set
oft with a simple, haunting painting, suggestive
of the Southern landscape, which has served as
inspiration for so much of Negro music.
The Orchestra Leaders' Music Library was
recently incorporated as a new publishing house.
The company has a capital stock of $5,000 and
is headed by D. A. Shirk, 225 Broadway, New
York, as incorporator.

Imposing Marriage Ceremony Takes Place at
St. Regis Hotel, New York, on Saturday Last
—Groom Enters Publishing Field
The marriage of Julius P. Witmark, Jr., only
son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius P. Witmark, and
Aline Prince, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron
Prince, of New York, was solemnized on Sat-
urday, September 17, the ceremony taking place
at the St. Regis Hotel. The guest list included
personages prominent in social, theatrical and
political circles and read like a veritable "Who's
Who."
Young Mr. Witmark thus enters the ranks
of the benedicts and those of business prac-
tically at the same time, having joined the music

"Mills Music Means Modern Music" to Be
Used Hereafter—Jack Mills on Trip to the
Middle West
Jack Mills, Inc., New York, has adopted a
new slogan, which will be appended to the
firm's advertising literature hereafter. It is:
"Mills Music Means Modern Music." Jack-
Mills, head of the publishing house, will leave
shortly on an extensive business trip through
the West and Middle West, and states that
his catalog looks as promising as it has in any
Fall in the firm's history. The firm's No. 1
song is "I Can't Believe That You're in Love
With Me," written by Jimmy McHugh and
Clarence Gaskill. The extraordinary appeal of
this number is emphasized by the fact that it
is at present being used in six musical produc-
tions. Frankie Morris features the number in
•the current edition of "Artists and Models."
Cliff Edwards does it in the "Ziegfeld Follies."
The song is represented in "Allez-Oop" by
the clever rendition of Kellers' Sisters and
Lynch. Winnie Lightner is featuring it in "Gay
Paree," Jans and Whalen in "Padlocks of
1927," and Evelyn Hoey finds it a valuable ad-
dition to her song repertoire in "Yours Truly."

publishing house of M. Witmark & Sons, New
York, only a short time ago. After graduating
from Columbia, "Junior" as he is known in the
trade, decided to follow in his father's footsteps,
and a short time before his marriage was made
manager of several important departments of
the firm, where he has already shown his mettle.
After a brief trip down the coast, Mr. and
Mrs. Witmark, Jr., will return to make their
home in the city, -and "Junior" will again get
back into harness. He'is looking forward to
an unusually busy Fall and Winter season, the
Witmark house having a tremendously enlarged
field to cater to since its successful entry into
the business of special publications and desirable
musical material for schools and colleges.
New Numbers Issued
by Boosey & Go.
Among the recent song issues of Boosey &
Co., Ltd., London and New York, is "The
Green-Eyed Dragon," composed by Wolseley
Charles with words by Greatrex Newman. The
lyric is full of sparkling wit, making the number
suitable for the lighter groups on vocalists' pro-
grams. The piece has already been used by
Reinald Werrenrath in his programs and is a
part of his repertory. "A Slumber Song of the
Madonna" is another interesting release of the
Roosey house, with words by Alf-ed Noyes and
music by Michael Head. Other late issues of
the house are: "Today," composed by Clarence
Olmstead, "Some Quiet Day," by Barbara Mel-
ville Hope, "Ah! Love, I Shall Find Thee," by
Gena Branscombe, "The Snow Man," by Harry
S. Pepper, "Recompense," by Winfrid Sander-
son, "Love Means All," by John Openshaw, "O
Lily Lady of Loveliness," by Maurice Besly,
"Let Me Sit in Your Garden," by Kennedy Rus-
sell, and several sacred songs.
