It is said much further remains to be done in
the collection of medieval codices, early im-
prints and holograph scores of the old masters.
For most of these things reliance mu.-t be had

The report of the Librarian of Congress, Her-

1926, contains among the features a report on
the music division by the chief, Carl Engel. The
music division lias become the greatest music
library in the United States, the grand total of
volumes and pamphlets exceeding a million in
number. More than this, the chief estimates
that "the real cause for gratification lies in the
knowledge that constantly and systematically
there is gathered sufficient material of superior

One of the most remarkable publications and
one which has from season to season shown
continued popularity is Bartlett's "A Dream."
Here is a song that has probably won as wide
a popularity as it is possible for an individual
composition to attain. The fact that the Oliver
Ditson Co. has found it necessary to add the
duet arrangements for soprano and tenor and
alto and baritone indicates the position which it
holds. Besides the above "A Dream" is avail-
able in all other keys, in piano solo form, as a

piano waltz, for violin and piano and easy violin
and piano, the organ, cornet and piano, cello
and piano, trio for violin, cello and piano, and
alto and tenor saxophone and piano. Thus the
number is made available for practically all
musical tastes. "A Dream" is establishing a
record as an ever fruitful profit maker as well teachers and scholars. Among the works listed
is the famous "Gordon's Graded I'iano Course."
as a consistent and persistent winning song.
These are issued in separate folios covering
nine grades, compiled and edited by Hamilton
S. Gordon, with fingering and annotations by
I. Frank heve.

J. T. Roach Elected Secretary and a
Director of Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge
Started With Firm as Errand Boy in 1906,. His Progress Has Been Steady Since That
Time—New Series in Public School Music to Be Issued Shortly
A T a recent meeting of the stockholders of
* * Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge, J. Tatian
Roach, manager of the music department, was
elected a director and secretary of the firm.
Mr. Roach has been in the employ of Hinds,
Hayden & Eldredge for a little over twenty
years, having started as an errand boy in 1906
at the age of seventeen. Within the space of
two years he was advanced by rapid stages to
the position of traveling representative, and in
1913, when he had been with the firm for only
seven years, he was put in charge of the music
department.
Music dealers who know the great success of
the "Most Popular Series" may be interested
to learn that school text-books comprise the most
important part of the Hinds, Hayden & El-
dredge catalog. Their basis texts in geography,
arithmetic, reading, spelling, grammar, etc., are
used extensively in school systems all over the
United States.
For the past five years the energies of the
music department have been centered on the
publication of music books for public school
use. Following the policy that made "The Most
Popular Series" and their school book publica-
tions tremendously successful, of obtaining the
foremost men as editors and using the finest
material available, Walter Danirosch, conduc-

tor of the New York Symphony Orchestra and
dean of American musicians; George H. Gartlan,
director of music in the public schools of Great-
er New York, and Karl W. Gehrkens, professor
of school music at Oberlin Conservatory, Ober-
lin, Ohio, were engaged as editors of their
school music texts. The resulting publications
proved instantaneous successes.
Dealers will have an opportunity soon of
ordering several fine new orchestra collections
designed for use in the schools and amateur or-
ganizations that will appear under the general
caption "Universal Orchestra Series." The title
of the basal course in public school music pub-
lished by Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge is the
"Universal School Music Series."
Two recent educational music books for
which there is already an active demand from
music schools and colleges are "Music Al," a
children's story book that presents the rudi-
ments of music instruction in a most appealing
manner and which is profusely illustrated, and
"Fifty Practical Lessons in the Elements of
Music Notation," which is designed to teach the
beginner in music the theoretical facts which
he must know.
Mr. Roach states that Hinds, Hayden &
Eldredge will have a very important announce-
ment to make to the trade within the next few
months.

Tom Burke, the Irish tenor, formerly of the
Chicago Opera Company, and hero of many an
operetta, of which the last was "The Lace Petti-
coat," is now playing a limited vaudeville en-
gagement appearing on Keith's circuit, where
he is meeting with characteristic success.
Mr. Burke has been especially commended on
the excellence of his vaudeville routine of songs,
which has been skilfully put together to show
the versatility of his talents. He opens with an
operatic aria, then sings Victor Herbert's popu-
lar "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life," and then a
brand new American ballad by Carl Rupp of
Cleveland, entitled "Just an Ivy Covered Shack,"
which is scoring an unusual success for the
popular tenor. To use his own words—"it is an un-
usual song and the audience seem to take it right
to their hearts." M. Witmark & Sons, publish-
ers of "Just an Ivy Covered Shack" are launch-
ing a national campaign in behalf of the song.
Although it is in "The Witmark Black and
White Series," a special pictorial edition will be
issued.
