'"THE recently organized Paul Whiteman Pub-

Music Co. of New York City, and headed by
Paul Whiteman himself, has just announced its

The Paul Whiteman Publications will be

"Spirit of St. Louis"
New Carl Fischer March
Number Played by United States Naval Band
During the Lindbergh Reception at Wash-
ington
There are a good many songs dedicated to
Charles A. Lindbergh, the non-stop New York
and Paris flyer. Some of these are having suc-
cess, including the popular number "Lucky
Lindy," published by Leo Feist, Inc. and "Lind-
bergh the Eagle of the U. S. A.," published by
Shapiro, Bernstein & Co.
Carl Fischer. Inc., is publishing a standard
number called "The Spirit of St. Louis." This
is in march time and for that reason has possi-
bilities of living longer than these quickly popu-
lar numbers.
The United States Navy Band in Washington,
D. C, used "The Spirit of St. Louis" march as
the feature musical number in the reception to
the aviator upon his arrival in Washington. The
march is written by Ralph H. Woods.
Besides being used in the various parades in
which Lindbergh appeared, "The Spirit of St.
developed in typical Whiteman style in modern
character with American atmosphere.
The Paul Whiteman American Dance Series
will consist of original compositions as de-
veloped by this great dance master for dance
purposes. The first two releases in this series
are "Oh Ya Ya," described as a South Ameri-
can novelty, and "Havanola," a novelty fox-trot
by Hugo Frey.
In the American Concert Edition is released
"A Study in Blue," by D. Savino, published as
a piano solo and in orchestral form. This is
a feature in the present programs of the Paul
Whiteman Orchestra, now playing at the Para-
mount Theatre, New York. In this series there
will follow "A Fantasie in Blue," and "Three
Shades of Indigo," both by Ferdie Grofe, White-
man's chief arranger and the composer of the
famous "Mississippi Suite," both issued for piano
solo and orchestra.
The first Paul Whiteman Rhythmic Transcrip-
tions of the Classics are also by Ferdie Grofe.
Among these that will shortly be completed are
"Sakuntala," by Goldmark; "Kamenoi-Ostrow,"
by Rubinstein; "Hymn to the Sun," by Rimsky-
Korsakoff; "Meditation from Thais," by Mas-
senet, and several others.

L. Wolfe Gilbert, who wrote some of the
best of old-time popular songs, including "Rob-
ert E. Lee," and such popular successes as
"Katrina" and "Calling Me Home," in col-
laboration with Abel Baer, is responsible for
the new Feist success, "Lucky Lindy." Here

The Century Music Publishing Co., which

carries a group of each title, so thus the pur-
chaser who serves himself does not mar the
display. Several dealers who have made use
of this Century display rack have found that
it is a source of much additional business. While
the Century Co. suggests a group of twenty
titles for the first series, there are altogether
over 600 feature titles available in the Century
Edition for such special displays. The titles
can be changed from time to time, thus keeping
up the consumer interest to a high pitch.

Under Full Speed Ahead
is a timely topical number that has met with
immediate approval. It carries the spirit of the
momentous New York and Paris air trip
made by Charles Lindbergh, the youthful Ameri-
can ambassador.
Naturally a song of this character was writ-
ten with speed. However, the basis of the
inspiration is not hard to conceive and such
experienced writers as L. Wolfe Gilbert and
Abel Baer had no difficulty in their work.
Through the courtesy of Wide World Service
we are herewith showing a photograph of these
writers in action just before announcing to the
world their timely product.
The standard music department of Irving Ber-
lin, Inc., announces that it has placed undei
exclusive contract for a term of years Ralph
Colicchio, one of America's foremost banjoists,
now being featured with Ernie Golden and His
Hotel McAlpin Orchestra. Mr. Colicchio is to
write a series of tenor banjo solos for the Ber-
lin firm and in addition will arrange all of the
popular Irving Berlin, Inc., songs for tenor banjo
solos, these to be published in a series of folios.
He is also preparing a tenor banjo method, an
educational book of banjo chords and other
simple studies for the beginner.
Another publication by the standard music
catalog of the Berlin Co. will be a series of
numbers for the saxophone. Arrangements,
specialized publications and folios will be made
by Clyde Doerr, who recently joined the Berlin
standard music forces. He will prepare all the
saxophone folios for the Berlin Co. of its popu-
lar songs, and a series of original saxophone
compositions.
