speaking countries the vocal rendition of these
numbers has been given little or no prominence.
Eric Borchard, the foremost German exponent
of modern type instrumental music, has left
Bremen for the United States for the purpose
of taking back with him some of the best jazz
singers. Seemingly the vocal renditions of
songs sung by negro quartets and other vocal-
ists have been quite popular on phonograph
records and have created a desire for the per-
sonal appearance of this type of singer. There-
fore, Mr. Borchard said that a good quartet and
a new American band will win honors and popu-
larity in Germany. Eric Borchard played for
American soldiers in camps during the war and
later on the Rhine.
"Willie the Weeper"
Latest Melrose Issue
Chicago Music Firm Announces Several Other
Novelties and New Re-issues
Melrose Bros. Music Co., Chicago, are intro-
ducing as their latest song hit "Willie the
Weeper." The number is an unique combina-
tion of novelty comic-song and excellent fox-
trot, and it is thought will be a popular sheet
music number as well as orchestra and band
selection. It is written by Grant V. Rymal,
Walter Melrose, and Marty Bloom with eight
extra verses.
Two other new numbers which have recently
been added to the Melrose catalog and which
are also very popular, include "Sax Appeal" and
"Sha-wan-da-moo." This latter number is an
Indian love song of striking beauty with a
weird melody based on the tribal Indian songs.
The company also announces that it has taken
over the publishing rights of the well-known
selection "A Sweetheart of Sigma Chi," from
Richard E. Bernor Publishing Co., Albion,
Mich. This number has enjoyed a good demand
tor the past fifteen years, and Melrose Bros,
announce that they will issue a new piano,
dance, and band arrangement and also the song
with a new attractive title-page. This song is
not only popular among the Sigma Chi frater-
nity but also other fraternal and collegiate
organizations.
Triangle Songs Abroad
The Triangle Music Publishing Co. has just
placed several of its songs with English publishing
houses. These numbers are "Oriental Moonlight,"
with Lawrence Wright & Co.; "Honeymoon
Waltz," with Keith Prowse & Co., and "You
Never Get Nowhere Holding Hands," and "Lonely
Nights in Hawaii," with Campbell Connelly & Co.
A deal was also closed with L. F. Collin Pty,
Ltd., of Melbourne, Australia, whereby it will
handle the entire Triangle Music Co. catalog.

DeSylva, Brown & Henderson
Making Rapid Progress
Firm Now Has Offices in New York, San
Francisco, Boston and Minneapolis, as Be-
*• ginning of National Organization
The new publishing firm of DeSylva, Brown
& Henderson, Inc., has made unusual strides in
the first ten weeks since its inception. It has
made active sellers of such songs as "It All
Depends on You," "So Blue," "I Wonder How 1
Look When I'm Asleep," "South Wind," "I'm in
Love Again," "I'ositively-Absolutely," "One
o'Clock Baby" and "Ask Me Another."
The importance of this new firm's song ma
terial is indicated by the important list of
professional singers, who are doing one or more
of these songs. This list includes Al Jolson,
Harry Richman, Sophie Tucker, Frances
Williams, Belle Baker, Cliff Edwards, Winnie
Lightner, Happiness Boys and Jack Smith.
Another indication of the progress of this
new publishing house is demonstrated by the
fact that practically all of its numbers are
either appearing on the leading rolls and rec-
ords or are booked for early release in such
form. Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra has
recorded "It All Depends on You" and "So
Blue" for the Victor Talking Machine' Co.
Other orchestras that have made DeSylva,
Brown & Henderson numbers for records are
Hen Bernie, Vincent Lopez, Sam Lanin, Joe
Candullo and others.
Of further importance in the development of
this group of young publishers is the recent
opening of their New York, San Francisco,
Boston and Minneapolis offices. This is only
the nucleus of what is to be a nation-wide
organization with branch offices in the key
centers.
The Chicago office of DeSylva, Brown &
Henderson is under the direction of Joey Stool,
who for a number of years was with the pro-
fessional department of J. H. Remick and is
considered one of the most popular music men
in the Chicago territory.
Irving Crocker has been placed in charge of
the Boston office, Jimmie Mulcrone manages
the Minneapolis office and Ben Berman the
San Francisco office of this firm. Robert
Crawford, president and general manager of
DeSylva, Brown & Henderson, has just returned
to the New York offices of the company after
two weeks spent in Mid-West territory, where
he made his headquarters in Chicago.
Dan Winkler, sales manager of the above
firm, is also at present handling most of the
mechanical reproduction. His work in both
directions has met with wide success.
The firm recently added to its New York
staff Elmore White as professional manager.
Mr. White also was formerly with the Remick
organization. The record of this firm is all
the more remarkable when it is considered that
its advent was made in a season that was con-
sidered one of the dullest for many months.

Vincent Lopez, well-known orchestra leader,
is preparing in musical form the jazz history of
t*he United States. The first episode describes
\f\ modern melodic style the famous ride of
Paul Revere. It is planned to accompany the
music by striking scenic effects, including a
moving cyclorama, showing the action. Each
episode will represent important event? in the

Jack Mills, head of Jack Mills, Inc., has just
returned from a six weeks' trip through the
South and West. He spent some time in
Pacific Coast centers and arranged some heavy
campaigns on some of his popular numbers,
including "Ya Gonna Be Home To-night" and
"Flapperette." Incidentally, the comedy num-
ber, "Ya Gonna Be Home To-night," is being
played by orchestras in the West, many of
which are using it with a singing version.
Wirges Piano Solos
Alfred & Co., .1658 Broadway, New York
City, of which Alfred L. Haase, of the Orches-
tra Music Supply Co., is director, has just
accepted for publication a series of clever piano
solos composed by "Eskimo" Bill Wirges, fea-
ture pianist with the Clicquot Club Eskimos,
which broadcast over the WEAF chain weekly.
The numbers are entitled "Aurora," "Igloo
Stomp," "Polar Pep," "Snowshoes" and "Over
the Ice."
"In an Oriental Garden"
The new publishing firm of John E. Hayes,
Inc., has as its first release a number called
"In an Oriental Garden." A release that will
shortly follow this number is "One Night of
Love in Spain," a Spanish waltz novelty done
in modern style. Other numbers that are to
be presented by this new publishing firm are
"Wake Up With a Smile" and "Lingering Lips."
John E. Hayes, Inc., is located at 56 West
Forty-fifth street.
"Doll Dance" Issued
Sherman, Clay & Co. recently issued a new
novelty song and dance called "Doll Dance,"
the music of which is by Nacio Herb Brown.
The publishers are exploiting this number with
some very clever advertising material, literature
for mailing and elaborate display matter. A
recent postal card on this new dance was done
in two colors, brown and orange, with the
caption "First the Charleston—later Black Bot-
tom—now Doll Dance 'Watch Out.' "
