Sanborn to Contribute
Pitts Sanborn, nationally known authority on
music, will contribute a chapter on music to a
book on careers which is being brought together
by Edward L. Bernays, well-known public rela-
tions counsel, and which will be published
shortly by the George H. Doran Co. Mr.
Bernays will contribute the chapter on public
relations.
Mr. Sanborn will outline the scope and func-
tion of the specific ideals, the essential qualities
necessary, the concrete methods of securing
education and recognition and the honorary
or monetary goals in the musical profession.
It is interesting Jo look forward to the analyses
he will give of this work.

The members of the society include many of
the prominent composers, writers and publishers
in America, and their organization has European
affiliations through which it controls the copy-
rights of many European composers and writers.
Among its members are John Philip Sousa,
Walter Damrosch, Mischa Elman, Irving Berlin,
Percy Grainger, Edwin Franko Goldman, Na-

What Shall I Give My Pupil?
Publishers and Record Makers Foresee Con-
tinued Activity During the Next Few Months
As in August of last year, popular sheet music
and popular records are now showing a renewed
sales activity. That is not to say that the Sum-
mer has been dull. As a matter of fact the sales
in June and July were fully up to expectations.
Publishers, however, and record manufacturers
had looked forward to the present sales spurt,
and believe it will continue with substantial in-
creases during the coming months. As far as
the records show, the Fall and Winter months
will always be most active and successful in the
history of popular publishing. There is no rea-
son to expect that this situation is to be
radically changed. The fact, however, thai
August is now proving an exceptional month for
the second time would lead to the conclusion
that the season of Fall sales is being somewhat
lengthened. Such a condition has two values to
both the popular publisher and the popular
record maker. They get not only the sub-
stantial increases during August, but also an ad-
vanced start on the Fall season. This probably
saves several weeks in preliminary campaigns
for Fall sales, and gives the entire industry an
earlier start.

"Barcelona" Moves Swiftly
You Will Find the Answer in the List of
When Leo Feist, Inc., arranged for the Ameri-
can publication of "Barcelona" with Cecil Len-
nox, Ltd., of London, England, it brought to
this country the second biggest European hit.
Only one other number at that time rivaled it
for popularity, and that was the equally well-
known "Valencia." "Barcelona" has certainly
taken a prominent place on the music counters
of this country, due to the fact that the Feist
organization is putting behind it a very ener-
getic campaign. It has come along swiftly in
recent weeks and doubtless before the early
weeks of the Fall season will be one of the
biggest numbers issued in recent seasons.

New Witmark Number First Played at Atlantic
City Takes Immediate Hold—By Benny Davis
and Lou Gold
M. Witmark & Sons recently accepted for
publication a new song called "That's My Girl,"
written by Benny Davis and Lou Gold. It was
introduced in Atlantic City during the past
week, played from lead sheets by numerous or-
chestras along the Boardwalk. It evidently went
over with a bang, as the calls received by the
various music stores in the above amusement
center indicate.
No doubt from this success achieved by
"That's My Girl," the publishers will immedi-
ately rush through orchestrations and piano
copies. No doubt, too, they will immediately
follow up this initial response in Atlantic City
with an energetic campaign in all other parts
of the country.
A visit at the New York offices of M. Wit-
mark & Sons finds the entire staff most enthusi-
astic over the showing made on "That's My
Girl" and they predict that it will not only be a
big success during the balance of the Summer
but that it also will be one of the outstanding
songs of the coming Fall season.
Berlin Selling Numbers
The sales department of Irving Berlin, Inc.,
is at present closing one of the most active
Summers in its history. Many of its numbers
introduced in the early part of the year are still
having large sales, and in addition its Spring
and Summer offerings are among the outstand-
ing successes. Included in these popular issues
is Irving Berlin's own "How Many Times." In
addition he has contributed a number of new
musical gems for the Summer edition of
the musical show "The Cocoanuts," the
three most important being "Ting-aling the
Bell'll Ring," "Why Do You Want to
Know Why?" and "Florida By the Sea."
The balance of the Berlin catalog includes such
numbers as "When the Red, Red Robin Comes
Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along," "I'd Climb the High-
est Mountain," "Blue Bonnet, You Make Me
Feel Blue," "That's Annabel," "Trying to For-
get," "But I Do, You Know I Do," and a
novelty song, "And I Forgot."
