delivery which has previously been made so
popular.
Miss Brooks had been primarily a pianist and
not a singer and it was only by accident that
she discovered how well her voice sounded
through the microphone. She is a thorough
musician, having been trained on the piano,
studying several years under the eminent teach-
er, Donato Montano. She appeared on the con-
cert platform as accompanist, following which
she entered vaudeville. Finding this life too
strenuous, about a year ago she joined the staff
of the Edward B. Marks Music Co. Her
familiarity with every class of artist, their style
and appeal, gave her a background for judging
what the public wanted in the way of popular
renditions and her entry into the radio field
brought immediate success.
Among the Marks nuinbers that Miss Brooks
sings so successfully are "Would-ja," "Reaching
for the Moon," "My Little Nest," "Ain't We
Carryin' On," "Wallflower" and "Nice Girl."

Besides the new high-class song called "Open

Quincke & Co., of Los Angeles, Cal., this firm
has an additional number called "It's Lone-

style it is thoroughly appropriate as a concert
number for artists and as a waltz is already
proving popular with orchestras throughout the
country.

Two New Penn Ballads
Arthur A. Penn, writer and composer of some
of the most successful ballads in America dur-
ing the past few years, has recently placed for
publication with Harold Flammer, Inc., two de-
lightful songs, the words and music of which
reflect this writer in an unusually happy mood.
The first of these new publications is a typical
Arthur Penn ballad, of the sort that made his
big successes like "Smilin' Through," "The
Magic of Your Eyes," "Sunrise and You," "The
Lamplit Hour" and others so popular. Its title
is "I Know a Low White Cottage." The other
Flammer offering by Mr. Penn is a delightful
song in yet another vein entitled "Mistress
Margarita." Both are, like all Mr. Penn's
work, finely melodious and will appeal strongly
to all singers who seek something a little "dif-
ferent" and yet contain all the elements that
make for universal appeal. Mr. Flammer on his
coast-to-coast tour this Summer is featuring
these Penn songs among the leaders in his
catalog.

Chicago Firm Brings Out Mason Slade's "Ten
Popular Compositions for the Organ"
"Ten Popular Compositions for the Organ,"
by Mason Slade, is now being published by the
Pallma Music Co., Chicago. These composi-
tions were written particularly for theatre or-
ganists in an entirely original style portraying
faithfully the subjects of the titles. The first is
"Parade," a military march in a melodious and
inspiring vein, followed by "Sleigh Ride," a
capricious scherzo in two themes; "Ukrania," a
Russian march; "The Town Pump," a rural
sketch including a country dance; "Soudanese,"
an Oriental dance presented in a unique man-
ner; "Joy of Living," "Caprice Viennois,"
"Punch and Judy," "The Musical Clock," "On
the Bowery," giving the spirit of the old-time
waltz favorites, and "Old Mammy," a Southern
lullaby giving a typical plantation setting.
a while writes a sung or two. This time it is a
beautiful Hawaiian waltz song entitled: "My
Hawaiian Serenade." He wrote it in conjunction
with Arthur C. King, who in his spare time
sings and plays over the radio and is on no less
than ten stations a week. In the past ten days
he has received over 500 letters commenting
upon his new song. He expects to make this
one of his plug songs this Fall in conjunction
with "She Belongs to Me," "I'm Leaving You,"
"I Don't Want to Forget."

PORTLAND, ORE., July 24. — Among the recent
visitors to the trade here was Harry Engel, of
Robbins-Engel, Inc., accompanied by his bride,
the former Miss Claire Kent, of Ottawa, Canada.
Mr. Engel said he found trade conditions splen-
did. He stated that his firm had closed ar-
rangements with the Oliver Ditson Co. for the
publication rights of six C melody saxophone
arrangements by Rudy Wiedoeft, the well-
known saxophone artist and composer, who, by
the way, recently appeared for a week's en-
gagement in Portland.
The Ditson numbers chosen for these new
saxophone arrangements are Cadman's "At
Dawning," Bartlett's "A Dream" and "The
Sweetest Story Ever Told," "Carry Me Back to

Twilight." The six numbers are bound in an

Bibo, Bloedon & Lang, Inc., the new and
enterprising firm of young popular publishers,
with executive offices at 1595 Broadway, New
York City, have closed arrangements for the
Australian rights of their publications with J.
Albert & Son, Sidney, Australia. The first of
these numbers that were transferred to the
Australian copyright owners were "Am I Wast-
ing My Time Over You," "My Cutey's Due at
Two to Two To-day" and "Will You Be True."
Mr. Albert, who recently has been visiting New
York publishers, was very much impressed with
these numbers and lost no time in concluding
arrangements.
