The large resonator on the floor was built by
the late Forest Cheney, inventor of the Cheney
phonograph, for concert purposes. It is now
used for acoustic analysis in connection with
the manometric apparatus. It is also the finest
radio loud speaker horn I have ever heard.
The small work bench is power equipped, hav-
ing a combination drill press, portable power
drill, brace, and power sawing table. This outfit
is used for making small wooden patterns or
other light woodwork which may come up as
incidental to scale drafting or tonal investiga-
tions.
Above the work bench is a cross-sectional
model made by Steinway & Sons of their style
B grand piano. The model is faithfully built to
scale and every detail is exactly reproduced.
Even the bars of the iron plate are set in exactly
(but made of wood), with every dimension
faithfully followed. The great value of this
model lies in its at once revealing to the eye
the relations of all parts in grand piano con-
struction, something for which one daily thanks
the makers. Steinway & Sons very generously
placed this model at my disposal some time ago,

diate attention.

when, in the course of writing a book on piano
construction which is being pushed forward as
rapidly as possible, the need for an inside view
of construction became imperative as a check
against errors.
Sound Board Analysis
In the third picture the table on the right
shows a set-up of acoustical apparatus arranged
Hurst, superintendent of the Rockford factory.
The specimen shown is undergoing the process
known as "checking up."
These illustrations and this description of a
laboratory devoted exclusively to investigations
into piano design, construction and tone, will
give readers some idea of the scope of the prac-
tical and theoretical investigations which art

for experiments on the sounds given out by
piano strings. Investigations have been under
way for some time past into the questions of
the influence of the piano sound board upon
tone production and the set-up shown consti-
tutes part of the apparatus being used for that
purpose.
To the left of the picture stands a Schumann
(Rockford, Jll.) grand piano of five feet two
inches length, the scale of which was drawn by
the writer and which has been worked into com-
pletion by the skilled hands of my friend, J. D.
needed to be made if the production of pianos
is ever to be put upon a scientific basis. No
one, I suppose, doubts the need of better pianos,
although every one justly wishes betterment to
be made without increase of factory cost. This
latter desideratum will only become possible,
however, when the industry shall have recog-
nized everywhere that the very fundamentals
of design require overhauling and putting
upon something like an exact basis. Once this
is done to any great extent the manufacture
of pianos will enter upon a new and happier

era. Not the best scale ever made indeed will
take the place of skilled practical work in the
factory. The. factory expert has the vital task
of reducing the designs furnished him to prac-
tical work in pianos; but the point is that a
scientifically designed scale facilitates every
process and every operation, provides the needed
foundation for large production without loss of
quality, promotes uniformity of quality and
helps to simplify and cut the cost of every op-
eration from the mill room to the tone regulat-
ing bench.

It would be ungracious to conclude this short
description of a practical and scientific tone
workshop without repeating the thanks already
expressed to John C. Deagan, to Steinway &
Sons and to Carl Williams for their practical
co-operation with me in making possible the
adequate equipment illustrated on page 32. The
apparatus placed at my disposal is of priceless
value. Those who say that there are no lovers
of tone science in the music industries are evi-
dently exaggerating, for here is proof to the
contrary.
Incidentally, all this may (and I hope will)
do something to dispel the somewhat common
idea that a man who writes on technical sub-
jects is necessarily not "practical."
