THE SCHULZ DONATELLO
HE 1926 Music Industries Convention will long be remembered for the enthusiastic
welcome given this newest M. SCHULZ CO. Old World Grand in its debut at the
Commodore Hotel.
Foreseeing a developing interest in the adaptation of Renaissance designs to piano
building, the M. SCHULZ CO. sought out exemplary antiques in famous Italian and
Spanish collections. From these Old World masterpieces came the Bardini, the
Castilla, and now the Donatello.
The basic motif of the Schulz, Donatello Reproducing Grand is the stately twisted
column, entwined with a grapevine. The accompanying paneling and mouldings are
decorated with foliated scrolls. It is a design which attained great vogue on the
more lavish of Italian Renaissance furniture, later to be imitated by wood-craft guilds
throughout Europe. Its employment by Bernini on the high altar of St. Peter's in
1627 is added evidence of the high esteem in which it was held.
