Movie Star Forced to Play
Harmonica in New Film
Studying Under Protest William Desmond De-
velops Into Real Harmonica Expert to the
Delight of Motion Picture Fans
SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., August 14.—The mouth
harmonica is shortly to make its debut in the
movies. Details of this were not confided to
the public by a press agent, but by William
Desinond, who has been filmed playing the in-
strument. Desmond and his company are film-
ing a new play, "The Winking Idol," at Bould-
er Creek, Santa Cruz County, and the enter-
prising manager of the picture house there
recently gathered in the residents and summer
visitors by advertising a speech by Desmond,
"in person." Desmond, who has a witty Irish
tongue, touched lightly on such sorrows of a
"movie" actor's life as being forced, by an
unfeeling director, to arise at daybreak, and
described with detail the latest exacting de-
mand made upon him by his director, Francis
Ford, who, he said, had declared enthusiasti-
cally, in effect:
"I've a brand-new idea for you to come
on—something never done before, and it'll inter-
est every man and boy in the audience." Des-
mond said he asked for details, and Francis Ford
described how the actor, supposed to be a cow-
puncher, was to appear: "You ride down the
trail, full of jazz, pep and vim, playing a mouth
harmonica. Put so much life into it that all
the spectators will want to play."
Desmond objected that he couldn't put life
into any harmonica, when he had never tried to
play one, but the director, swept away by his
idea for a brand-new entrance for his star,
said that if Desmond had never tried the har-
monica he wasn't in a position to say he could
not play it, and, anyway, he must learn enough
to give the spectators the impression that he
was a harmonica virtuoso.
Desmond told his Boulder Creek listeners
that he bought a harmonica, absorbed a few
tips from the salesman on how to play it, and
retired to a secluded spot in the redwoods, to
practice. "You won't shoot me, if I play for
you?" he asked. The answer being unanimous
applause, Desmond brought out his harmonica,
and played several popular songs with such vim
and musical feeling that the frail wooden build-
ing literally rocked with applause.

The violin, piano and other instruments have
been filmed many times, but it is believed that
the harmonica is a newcomer on the screen.
