SUPPLY BRANCHES OF THE INDUSTRY
Oxholm Heads Wood
Utilization Committee
Chief of Lumber Division, Bureau Foreign and
Domestic Commerce, in Charge of This New
Body
WASHINGTON, D. C, December 12.—Axel H.
Oxholm, chief of the lumber division of the
Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce,
who has been selected by Secretary of Com-
merce Hoover as Director of the National Com-
mittee on Wood Utilization, will begin his new
duties at once, but for a time will also continue
to supervise the work of the division. Mr.
Oxholm became associated with the Department
of Commerce in 1916 as a lumber trade com-
missioner, and was sent to northern Europe to
study the forestry resources, lumber manufac-
ture and utilization. Since that time he has held
many important posts here and abroad in the
field of lumber conservation and utility.
Suggestions which have been received by the
National Committee on Wood Utilization indi-
cate an increasing recognition that the con-
servation of timber resources through more
efficient use of wood is of immediate benefit
and is as important to the general public as
ultimate reforestation. The purpose of the
committee's work is to promote greater effec-
tiveness in preventing wastes arising from pres-
ent methods, so that the public at large as well
as the American industry may benefit.
The simplification and standardization of
softwood and hardwood lumber is considered a
most important step in this direction, and the
reduction of variety in yard lumber items of
60 per cent has been given further strength by
the action of the hardwood lumber industry to
undertake an early simplification in the hard-
wood field. The adoption by the softwood lum-
ber industry of standards for lumber, timbers
and other items is of marked effect, preventing
as it does to a large extent the cutting of sub-
standard lumber which does not properly serve
the wants or needs of the ultimate user and
which has been an important element of waste.
Both manufacturing and consuming groups
have indicated to the committee their interest
in the elimination of waste in small dimension
lumber—lumber cut to suit the requirements
of wood users at points distant from the supply
of timber. They are also deeply interested in
the elimination of wastes incident to the manu-
facture of lumber in fabricating plants where
wood is turned or resized from larger pieces.
The committee has been urged to undertake a
survey of the requirements of each of the wood-
using industries.
Haas Reports Heavy
Demand This Year
High Production Figure
According to Harold L. Haas, president of
Henry Haas & Son, Inc., Plainfield, N. J., 1925
lias proved a very successful year for this con-
cern.
"In fact," said Mr. Haas to a representative
of The Review this week, "ever since we have
WASHINGTON, D. C, December 12.—A new high
level for general manufacturing production was
reached in October of this year at 139 per cent
of the 1919 monthly average, according to the
Plant of Henry Haas &
index number of the Department of Commerce
just announced in its report. This year's gen-
eral index was 14 per cent higher than that of
October, 1924. Certain industries contributing
supplies for the manufacture of pianos showed
indices of gain as follows: Lumber, 5 per cent;
iron and steel, 10 per cent; non-ferrous metals,
4 per cent.

been located in our new factory, which was
erected four years ago especially to meet the
requirements of piano hardware manufacturing,
we have shown steady progress. During the last
few months, in spite of the poor business ex-
perienced early in the year, we have been
working to full capacity and will make a very
satisfactory showing."
During the past year Cyril H. Haas assumed
the position of general superintendent, a posi-
tion which he is very well fitted for, due to
the fact that he graduated as an engineer
from a prominent university and to his expe-
rience of several years in other lines of manu-
facturing.
Under his supervision efficiency in the opera-
tion of the plant, as well as the quality of the
product has been considerably improved. The
concern is now devoting a great deal of effort
to the manufacturing of hardware for grand
pianos and this business has become the greater
part of the demand. The concern has also had
a large call for a high-grade music wire of for-
eign manufacture which they have been market-
ing for the last two years. According to Mr.
Haas, many of the largest and best-known piano
makers, as well as several of the leading bass
string manufacturers, are now using this prod-
uct.

Posey Increasing Output
Announcement has been made recently by the
Posey Mfg. Co., maker of piano sounding boards
in Hoquiam, Wash., that alterations to the plant
are being made to increase its capacity. H. O.
Galloway, manager of the business, stated that
the company's activity in making sounding
boards during the past season has warranted
the enlargements.
