New Christmas Music
in Ditson Octavo Series
Special Holiday Issues in This Edition An-
nounced by Well-known Music Publisher
Of particular importance to the octavo series
of the Oliver Ditson Co. is the addition of a
series of numbers to its Christmas carols and
Christmas anthems. To the anthems have been
added "Around the Manger," for mixed voices;
"It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," for mixed
voices, with soprano and baritone solos; "Sing,
Christmas Bells," for mixed voices, with soprano
solo; "The Blessed Lullaby," for women's
voices, with soprano solo, and "This Is the Day
the Christ Is Born," for mixed voices.
There is also "Ten Traditional Carols for
Christmas," arranged for men's voices by
Charles Fonteyn Manney. The compilation in-
cludes "O, Come, All Ye Faithful," "Hark! the
Herald Angels Sing," "God Rest You, Merry
Gentlemen" and others equally popular, includ-
ing "Silent Night" and "O Little Town of Beth-
lehem." "A Little Christmas Carol," for mixed
voices, is also among these new issues.
Jazz Grand Opera
Tito Schipa, tenor of the Chicago Opera
Company, announces that he has made plans to
produce the first grand opera with jazz. He
has employed Ted Fiorito, well-known popular
composer and orchestra conductor, to write the
score.
Tito Schipa says:
"The typically
American motifs in jazz and syncopated music
are capable of carrying symphonic or grand
opera significance. For years I have been plan-
ning to promote the writing and production of
a native American grand opera based on typi-
cally American themes with modern American
music."

"I Knew," described as a barcarolle, is being
programmed by a large number of concert art-

CHICAGO, 111., October 31.—James P. Durkin, of
508 Barton avenue, Evanston, 111., whose body
was recently found in an alley, after having
been struck by an ash cart, operated a music
publishing company, with offices in the Republic
Building, this city.
Aloha Music Co., with offices at 1658 Broad-
way, New York City, announces its first publi-
cation, "Sunny Smiles of Hawaii." The new
company is under the direction of John Palalaiki.
Whiteman Features Marks
Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, who
recently recorded "Manhattan" and "Senti-
mental Me" for Victor records, are now includ-
ing these two numbers from "Garrick Gaieties"
in their concert programs. "Manhattan" and
