time it has developed a catalog of importance.
Its numbers include concert songs, both dra-
matic and lyric, sacred songs and songs for
church occasions, including Christian Science,
encore songs and musical readings, ballads, an-
thems, secular with important octavo numbers,
organ compositions and much teaching material.
Three New Triangle Songs
Joe Davis, head of the Triangle Music Pub-
lishing Co., has just returned to his New York
offices following a week stay in Chicago pop-
ularizing "What-Cha-Call-'Em Blues." The
song is going over big in that territory, which
is a fertile field for blue numbers. While in
Chicago Joe Davis bought three songs from
the McKinley Music Co., "I Ain't Got No-
body" (And Nobody Cares For Me), "Dallas
Blues" and "I'm A Real Kind Mama." "I Ain't
Got Nobody" was originally introduced by
Marion Harris and Sophie Tucker, which as-
sures it of further popularity.

the firm—and Miss Sappington, a Goddess of
Beauty. I arrived at the store rather early in
the morning and upon entering met Miss Sapp-
ington, who wore an emblem signifying that she
was the daughter of a Noble Brother. That im-
mediately made me feel at home. There was
considerable activity during the short time I
was in the store and I am satisfied that the
Sappington Music Co. is getting its share of
business in this section of the country.
These young people are to be admired for the
energy they display in their daddy's business.
Miss Sappington looks after the sheet music
department, which is comprised of popular mu-
sic, the principal selections in demand and a
few standard methods, studies, etc. This house
looks upon sheet music not as a money maker
but as a drawing card. They feel it is just as
much a part of a music house as a piano.
Young Mr. Sappington very courteously took
me on a tour through the city so that I might
see and enjoy that part of the country. We
passed grove after grove and the sights were
really inspiring. After awhile, I asked young
Sappington why there were so many scare-
crows in the groves. "I know they are nec-
essary to frighten the crows and other harmful
birds—but why so many?" I said. "Scare-
crows? Why, those aren't scare-crows—those
are the orange-pickers resting," Mr. Sapping-
ton explained.
But There's Local Pride
We drove back to the city and there were
fruit packing houses to the right of me—fruit
packing houses to the left of me, fruit trees
growing in the park. In fact, I found that
orange juice was a cheaper drink than near beer
and much healthier. I did stop to send some
fruit to my friends up North. It is surprising
to see the amount of fruit that goes to waste
in Florida and how expensive it gets when you
want to send it out. In passing one store,
young Sappington remarked: "See those (they
were grape-fruit); that's the way our oranges
grow down here; have you ever seen any other
oranges that size?" "Why," I said, "do you
think they are large? Some of our Long Is-
land potatoes would make those grape-fruit
look like grapes."
Will Exploit Three Numbers From Edward B.
Marks Music Co. Catalog in Germany
Number of Noteworthy Compositions Are In-
cluded in List Just Sent out by This House
Charles Brull, the well-known German pub-
lisher and head of Edition Karl Brull, has re-
turned to Europe following a several weeks'
visit to this country. He took back with him
contract to exploit three numbers from the Ed-
ward B. Marks Music Co. catalog, namely,
"Montmarte Rose," "Just A Little Kiss From
You," and "Sob Sister Sadie." Mr. Brull in-
tends to widely exploit these numbers in the
European centers. The same German publish-
ing house will also feature May Singhi Breen's
"Comic Ukulele Book" and "Kiddy Ukes" as
well as the Ross Gorman saxophone numbers,
"Skaters," fox-trot, and "Wagneriana."
Hinds, Hayden & Eldredge, Inc., has just for-
warded to the trade its late Spring stock offer.
In a pamphlet in which its publications are
listed there appears a number of new publica-
tions by noteworthy composers, including the
following ballads: "A Smile, A Rose, A Kiss,"
"It Is for You," "I Would Hold You In My
Arms" and "June"; three new recital songs,
"My Love," by Gartlan, "Star Eyes" and "Sun-
set"; a humorous encore song, "The Cater-
pillar," and a piano album by Cedric Lemont
called "Little Pilgrims." This contains fifteen
pleasing pieces for the young pianists in the first
and second grades. The same publishers have
just issued in octavo form "The Lilac Tree."
These are in two and three parts for women's
voices, and four parts for mixed voices and
four parts for male voices. The Hinds, Hayden
& Eldredge, Inc., catalog contains some of the
most popular encore songs now being presented
in concert and recital programs, including such
songs as "The Newlyweds," "April Fool and
Little Pig Nose," and "When Mother Wields
the Shingle." Also included in the current spe-
cial offer are a wide assortment of the "Most
Popular Music Books."
New Meyer Davis Orchestra
Meyer Davis, who now controls a chain of
ninety-four orchestras, is probably head of the
largest popular musical organization in the
world. His rise has been rapid. Fourteen
years ago he was violinist in the new Willard
Orchestra in Washington. Meyer Davis, per-
sonally, and his orchestra are in demand for
exclusive social functions. His musical com-
binations are popular on various talking ma-
chine records and he is furnishing music for
many of the most prominent entertainment
palaces of the East. His latest enterprise is the
Chateau Le Paradis at Ammendale, Md., twelve
miles from Washington, D. C, on the Washing-
ton-Baltimore boulevard. Music here is fur-
nished by the Meyer Davis Tent Band under
the direction of Nathan Brusiloff.
Sings Over the Radio
CINCINNATI, O., May 16.—Florence K. Braun, of
the Three Arts Club of this city and directress
of the Price Hill Choral Club, sang three well-
known numbers from station WSAI on Tues-
day evening of this week. They included "Lit-
tle Telltale" (Candlyn), "Trifles" (Grey), the
words of which are by Caroline L. Sumner
and "Hope On," also by Miss Sumner.

"Sleeping Beauty's Wedding," one of the re-
cent additions to the Edward B. Marks catalog,
is being featured by a long list of music mer-
chants throughout the United States who are
carrying the complete arrangements. The num-
ber is issued for male quartets, for violin and
piano, large and small orchestras, violin solo
and mandolin solo. This publication comes to
this country after widespread popularity in the
capitals of Europe. The music is by Max
Rhode with American lyrics by Dave Ringle.
New Sheet Music Rules
Under the new rules of the post office depart-
ment sheet music can be sent by parcel post in
any package of eight ounces or over. Hereto-
fore, such packages were required to be a mini-
mum of four pounds or over. The lower parcel
post rates are now available for merchandise
of less weight and will reduce the cost of ship-
ments for both publishers and dealers, particu-
larly for dealers who generally pay such
charges.
