J. Fischer & Bro., the well-known standard
publishing house, which for over forty years
have been located at 9 Bible House, New York
City, have just closed arrangements whereby the
new home of the company will be the entire
fifteenth floor in 113-119 West Fortieth street,
through to 114-118 West Forty-first street. The
lease is for a long term of years with aggre-
gate rentals of over a quarter of a million
dollars. Altogether the new quarters will give
this publishing house fifteen thousand square

entrances, but is designed in a manner that
makes it one of the best-lighted floors in the
city.
J. Fischer & Bro. have for several years out-
grown their old quarters. The business of the
company has shown substantial increases each
year and its catalog, embracing as it does music
publications of all kinds with particular em-
phasis upon 1 church music, is one of the most
important in the industry.
In April of this year J. Fischer & Bro. will
celebrate their sixty-first anniversary. The busi-
ness was founded by Joseph Fischer, the son
of J. Christoph Fischer, a teacher and or-
ganist, who came to this country from Ger-
many in 1857. He was the grandfather of the
present directors of the firm, George and Carl
T. Fischer, both of whom are actively engaged
in the development of the business. George
Fischer is also well known as the president of
the Music Publishers' Association of the United
States.
Moritz Moszkowski, Well
Known Composer, Is Dead
End Comes in Paris After Long Career Which
Made Him Internationally Famous in Musical
World
Moritz Moszkowski, the famous pianist,
teacher and composer, who died in Paris re-
cently, was internationally known to music lov-
ers and was the particular friend of practically
every concert pianist in the world.
M. Moszkowski, who was financially ruined
during the World War and through ill health
was obliged to give up his teaching, had his
declining years made easier by the efforts of
Paderewski, Harold Bauer and many of his
American pupils. In December, 1921, he was
the recipient of a unique tribute from his fel-
low artists when fifteen of the greatest pian-
ists of his time played together in Hippo-
drome, to do him honor and help him financially
in his hour of need. Among his better-known
works are a symphony "Jeanne d'Arc" in four
movements; a group of Spanish dances, an
opera, "Boabdil," and a three-act ballet, entitled
"I ,aurin."
Edward 15. Marks Music Co. has issued
"Montmartre Rose," described as an Apacho
fox-trot. This number had its original pop-
ularity in Paris and London and the Marks Co.
secured exclusive publishing rights in the
United States.

A most interesting folio has just arrived from
the press of the Oliver Ditson Co., containing
"Ten Negro Spirituals," including the best-
known of these offerings, such as "Deep River,"
"Goin' to Shout," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,"
"Steal Away," "Ride on, King Jesus" and
others. The arrangements are by William
Arms Fisher, Harvey B. Gaul, J. Rosamond
Johnson and Charles Fonteyn Manney. This
compilation should have a wide sale, and it
should be part of the library of every music
lover in the country. The Oliver Ditson Co.
has also issued "Then Recital Pieces," for the
piano. This collection includes some well-
known works which should give it popularity
among artists and other musicians.

of the

country who through the manner of their musi-
cal presentations have won national recognition.
Mr. Murtagh stages his organ program in a
manner that adds considerably to the organ
renditions. The original manner in which he
presents current popular songs gives him a
place of distinction in the eyes of popular pub-
lishers who are ever ready to co-operate with
him, knowing that the unusual methods pursued
are bound to be impressive with the result that
his programs create sales for music.
One of the more recent presentations by Mr.
Murtagh was that of the Broadway Music Co.'s
number "Cross Words Between Sweetie and
Me." An idea of the manner in which this
song was presented is given through the ac-
companying reproduction of a photograph
taken at the Lafayette Theatre, showing Mr.
Murtagh at the right with one of his singers
surrounded by a cross-word square.

SKATTLE, WASH., March 16. — Bernard Barnes,
cesses, has just closed negotiations with B. the Seattle composer, whose novelty fox-trot,
Feldman & Co., Ltd., London, England, where- "Dainty Miss," is at present having unusual
by the Gillespie prints are to be widely ex-
ploited in the British Isles. The number in-
cludes the entire catalog of the Gillespie Co.,
such as "Your Eyes Have Lost the Lovelight,"
"Absence Brings Wistful Thoughts of You,"
"The Story Your Eyes Told Me" and the pres-
ent big success, "Moonlight Makes Me Long
For You."
This latter number is being played by many
dance orchestras throughout the United States
and is also programmed widely in vaudeville.
Dave and Mae Hawthorne, who are playing
vaudeville in Southern territory, at a recent
appearance in Tampa, Fla., were repeatedly en-
cored for their rendition of this love song. Sta-
tion WCAE, of Pittsburgh, broadcast "Moon-
light Makes Me Long For You" each evening
at 6:30, played by Charles Marsh and the fa-
mous William Penn Hotel Orchestra.
"If We Should Part" Is
New Sherman-Clay Song
Other Numbers Recently Issued Are "On the
Oregon Trail" and "Oh, Vera"
Sherman, Clay & Co. have just issued a new
ballad called "If We Should Part," by Victor
Schertzinger, composer of "Marcheta" and
other successes. The number is one of the best
things Mr. Schertzinger has written and the
Sherman-Clay organization will feature it dur-
ing the coming months.
Richard Powers, manager of the New York
offices of the Sherman-Clay organization, is
also introducing a new song entitled "On the
Oregon Trail." This number is available vo-
cally for both concert artists and vaudeville
singers. As a dance selection it has already
been introduced by George Olsen and His Or-
chestra in "Ziegfeld Follies." Another new
Sherman-Clay release is a novelty called "Oh,
Vera." This should be heard frequently in
vaudeville and is already popular with orches-
tras.

Barnes is well known in musical circles of this

at the Coliseum, Liberty and Strand Theatres
as relief organist. His new composition,

Outstanding Berlin Songs
The Irving Berlin,. Inc., numbers "Show Me
the Way," "Oh, How I Miss You To-night,"
"Yearning" and the big campaign number "Lis-
tening" are the outstanding songs of the Berlin
Spring activities. These, together with some of
the older Berlin selections which are still active,
such as "All Alone" and "Oh, Mabel," are in-
cluded in practically every order coming in to
the Berlin offices. Besides the above the songs
"Marie, Marie, Marie" and "Can't Your Friend
Get a Friend for Me" are also showing activity.
Livsey Piano Lessons
Volume 2 of "Easy Piano Lessons," by Stella
Morse Livsey, is among the newer issues of the
B. F. Wood Music Co. This volume has been
eagerly awaited by the trade and by music
teachers generally. It is along the same char-
acter as Miss Livsey's earlier work. The selec-
tions should prove of unusual interest to the
young student and should aid considerably in
holding attention and encouraging practice.
