George A. Friedman
Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Business Manager of Jack Mills, Inc., Receives
Congratulations of Fellow Workers Upon His
Silver Wedding Anniversary
George A. Friedman, business manager of
Jack Mills, Inc., and his wife recently cele-
brated the twenty-fifth anniversary of their
wedding. Mr. Friedman received congratula-
tions from his co-workers and many of his
friends in the trade who were aware of the
important event in his life.
Mr. Friedman is one of the best-known music
men in the publishing field. He has been con-
nected with some of its most successful houses
and has a wide range of acquaintance among
dealers and other important factors. For a
number of years he was general manager of the
Broadway Music Corp., following which he as-
sisted in organizing and placing on a firm
foundation the firm of McCarthy & Fisher
which later changed its name to Fred Fisher,
Inc. For a short time he was in business for
himself under the trade name, George A. Fried-
man, Inc. In all, he has been connected with
the music publishing business over twenty-two
years.
Two more convictions have been scored in
Chicago as a result of a campaign against song
sharks instituted by the Post Office Department
in co-operation with the Better Business Bureau
of the Music Industries Chamber of Commerce
and other interests to end, if possible, that type
of fraud.
In the latest Chicago case, Lester E. Simmons
and Mary F. Letgers, operating under various
names, including the Idyl Publishing Co., War-
field Music Service, Letgers Music Co., etc.,
were let off with fines of $750 and $250, re-
spectively, by U. S. Judge Carpenter, after re-
funds had been made to those of their victims
whose complaints were on file and who had
expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of
their transaction.
In addition to paying fines the defendants also
signed an affidavit in which the postmaster at
Chicago was instructed to treat as refused all
mail addressed to the company names under
which they had been operating.
Investigation of the case brought out a num-
ber of pathetic incidents. One girl in Ohio, a
cripple, had paid to the defendants money being
saved for an operation in an effort to improve
her financial condition by writing songs. An-
other invalid received back nearly $300 paid
to the sharks.

Byron Gay, the composer and author of "The
Vamp," "Little Ford Rambled Right Along,"
"Fate," "Oh," "Sanddunes" and other successes,
is sending forth propaganda suggesting that a
test case be made of the Copyright Law of
1909 which arbitrarily imposes a royalty of 2
cents per title on mechanical recordings. It is
his contention that the present law does not
give a monopoly to the composer as intended
and that the fact that once permission is given
for mechanical rendition any manufacturer can
record the number by the payment of 2 cents
royalty per record proves his case. He fur-
ther contends that competition for the use of
musical numbers for mechanical reproduction
purposes would work to the advantage of rec-
ord manufacturers by giving them limited rights
for periods on exclusive material.

Gallo Opera in New York
Fortune Gallo, grand opera impresario, will
present his opera company to New York this
year at the Manhattan Opera House, according
to present plans, as it is expected that "The
Miracle" will still be in the Century when the
Gallo season rolls around. Last year Gallo gave
five weeks in the Century to big grosses.
There will also be two Gallo opera companies
on tour this year, at least. One will be North
and the other South, each with a full roster of
principals and chorus.
A pre-season engagement for one week only
will be played the week of August 11 for the
Asheville, N. C, Music Festival. This week is
guaranteed to Gallo. Formerly the Philadelphia
Symphony was called upon to be the high light
of this celebration.

Gets Sousa Musical Library
WASHINGTON, I). C, August 1.—The Library of
Congress is to get the John Philip Sousa Musi-
cal Library. On a report from Philadelphia
that the March King was to give all of his
musical collection to libraries throughout the
country, reserving most of it for the Library
of Congress, the news was received here with
gratification by Carl Engel and his co-workers
in the music division. It is planned to make a
special exhibit of it.
Reverts Back to Author
Maude Nugent's "Sweet Rosie O'Grady,"
which has been in the catalog of the Edward
B. Marks Music Co., recently reverted back to
the author with the expiration of the original
copyright. The number continues in popularity
and has become a standard seller. • It will, it is
understood, be placed in the catalog of the
highest bidder.
