Miss Martha Ostenso, the young school
teacher from the West whose novel, "The Pas-
sionate Flight," won the $13,000 prize offered
by Dodd, Mead & Co., the Pictorial Review and
Famous Players, is also the writer of "Wind on
the Hill." The musical composition appears in
school publications issued by the John Franklin
Music Co. "Wind on the Hill" has been selected
for all Kansas high schools this year as a con-
test number.
Frank Sheridan, head of the John Franklin
Music Co., in speaking of this successful young
lady who is now recognized as a great writer,
recently said: "I take a great deal of pride in
this young woman's success as I discovered her
great ability from some lyrics which she sent in
to us some two years ago. Previously she had
no success in having her works accepted. We
immediately accepted eight, and as the girl
seemed discouraged I wrote her a letter of
encouragement in return telling her what I
really thought of her offerings—excellent. Miss
Ostenso was in Manitoba at the time and she
told me the other day that the letter and the
accompanying check (small as it was) told her
she had created something more than mere
words and started her on her present success-
ful road."
Besides "Wind on the Hill" Miss Ostenso has
contributed the lyrics for a number of chorals
published by the John Franklin Music Co. "An
April Song" is published in three keys as is her
former work.
Isham Jones and His Orchestra have recorded
the number for the Brunswick records, and it
is being programmed by some of the other
leading orchestra organizations.
Egbert Van Alstyne
Scores Hit in Buffalo
Featuring Remick Co. Numbers Wins Enthu-
siastic Applause From Audiences at Shea's
Hippodrome
BUFFALO, N. Y., November 24.—Egbert Van
Alstyne, member of the staff of composers of
the Jerome Remick Publishing Co., recently
Opening his act with the playing of several
of his own old-time compositions never fails
to attract and create interest. During the rais-
ing of the curtain Mr. Van Alstyne plays
"Cheyenne," and interest in the audience is most
keen. He holds their interest with renditions
of "Pretty Baby," "What's the Matter With
Father," "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree"
and several others of his own works. Lighting
effects are not a secondary matter given atten-
tion, but carefully arranged and unique stage
lighting gives the song act particular appeal.
The stage is durkened, and a fine screen dropped,
on which rhymed comments on the old songs
are thrown. A spotlight reveals only the head
and shoulders of Mr. Van Alstyne as he is
seated at his piano, which is at a forty-five
degree angle on the stage.
The screen is raised, and Clem Dacey, bari-
tone, and John Griffin, tenor, sing the Remick
company's latest song hits, accompanied by Mr.
Van Alstyne at the piano.
William McDennott, district manager for
the Jerome Remick Co. in this city, said this
has been the most successful visit Mr. Van
Alstyne has ever had here. He received excel-
lent co-operation from dealers throughout the
city.

song hits, "Follow the Swallow," "Old Pal,"
