SUPPLY BRANCHES OF THE INDUSTRY
78,750 Standard Actions
Produced in 21 Months
45,000 of These Sent Out Within One Year
—Actions Now Used in Every Country
' Throughout the World
Some interesting production figures of Stand-
ard player actions are given out in the current
issue of the Standard Player Monthly, of the
Standard Pneumatic Action Co., New York.
The announcement of 45,000 Standard player
actions put out in one year, and 78,750 actions
in twenty-one months, gives a good idea of
the capacity of this plant.
Standard player actions have been delivered
to Canada, Australia, England, France, Bel-
gium, Germany, Spain, China and to numerous
points in the United States, according to the
house organ. "Then from these points they
have traveled in player-pianos to the uttermost
parts of the earth, to the Equator, to the Polar
Regions. Exposed to all changes of weather
and of climate the Standard player actions have
stood the test. Their excellent qualities have
been proved. Hence, the great demand for
them."
Crude Rubber Prices
Prices for crude rubber this last week dropped
to the lowest levels in about two years. This
decline, according to trade authorities, occurred
in face of general improvement in the statistical
position of the industry. It is explained, how-
ever, that the decline was as inevitable as the
rise from the low levels of two years ago. Al-
though the statistical position of the industry
is good, the demand for the product is what
governs the movement of prices. According to
one authority the statistical position may con-
tinue to improve for two years, but still be
accompanied by lower prices.
Lumber Shows Improvement
The lumber market shows a somewhat better
tone, though there has not been notable im-
provement in demand of prices. Dealers and
consumers show more interest and manufactur-
ers seem less disposed to sell at prevailing low
levels, says the American Lumberman. Feeling
generally is that prices have touched bottom

and are likely to rally at any time. Stability of
softwood prices is taken as an indication that
the recent precipitate decline has been checked.
Mills declare prices now realized are below
production costs and many of them are cur-
tailing.
Pig-iron Curtailment
A significant curtailment of the daily average
pig-iron production was recorded in May of this
year, the totals for that month being 84,358 tons
against 107,781 tons daily in April. The May
figures, however, do not tell the real story of
the curtailment of production in the industry,
as the capacity of the 184 active furnaces on
June 1 was only 77,300 tons, or more than 7,000
tons below the daily average for last month.
The daily average output last month was the
smallest reported since September, 1922, when
the industry was on the way to recovery fol-
lowing the depression of 1921.
The only occasion on which the production
of pig iron showed a greater percentage drop
in a single month than last month was in
October, 1919, when the production averaged
b0,115 tons, compared with 82,932 tons in Sep-
tember. This reduction amounted to approxi-
mately 26 per cent, against the decline of 22
per cent reported last month.
Shellac Shortage Reported
The shellac market was disturbed last week
as a result of a shortage of supply, which ap-
parently will continue for some time.
The steamship "Chalister," with 7,200 bags
on board, which was being rushed to this coun-
try to alleviate the shortage, is reported to be
on fire outside Port Said, according to the Oil,
Paint and Drug Reporter. The ship was due
to dock in this city June 29. Two months' de-
lay in delivery of this shellac is certain, and
there remains the possibility of a complete loss,
or a serious damage to the shellac. As a result,
prices have been advanced here. Little shellac
has been purchased recently, and this lot had
been relied on to take care of absolute needs.

Sales in Australian Markets Largely of Clear-
ance Nature—New Clip in That Country
Looks Good
Conditions in the primary wool markets have
not changed greatly. Sales of a clearance na-
ture chiefly are to be held at Sydney this month
and at Brisbane the first of July, with small
offerings also at Adelaide and Melbourne.
These sales will hardly be conclusive.- of mar-
ket conditions, however, as the wools to "be
auctioned will not be especially typical and par-
ticularly as regards this market. The next sale
in London will commence July 1, offerings to
be announced. Included in the sale probably
will be most of the 34,000 bales withdrawn from
the preceding series because of high limits.
Some 30,000 bales will be offered in the Liver-
pool East India sales commencing June 17.
Reports from Australia state that the new
clip is looking very well, copious rains having
fallen all over New South Wales, and the sheep,
on the whole, have had a very good year.
Moreover, the drought which was so harmful to
the last wool clip apparently did not decimate
the flocks to the extent that usually has been
the case in time of severe drought.
Reports from Argentina, on the other hand,
indicate the probability of a slight decrease in
the clip there, which will occur in the low
crossbred end of the market. At the moment,
demand for the Southern territory and Chubut
wools is slow, France being the only operator
of moment, according to mail advices. Stocks
in the Buenos Aires market a month ago were
about 45,000 bales, of which about 37,000 bales
were Chubuts and territories and 5,000 second
clip wools.

THE
HEART OF THE
PIANO
J. T. Patterson, president and treasurer of
the Cornwall & Patterson Mfg. Co., was among
those attending the convention in New York
City last week. In a previous announcement
in The Review Stamford, Conn., was erro-
neously given as the home office of the com-
pany instead of Bridgeport. The Cornwall &
Patterson Mfg. Co. has an exceptionally large
and well-equipped plant in Bridgeport, devoted
solely to the production of piano hardware,
which has been described at length in past issues
of The Review.
