OPERATIC CONTEST IN ITALY
A musical jury composed o f Puccini, A lfano,
Ci lea, Molinari and Se~a fin has h eld meetings
in :(o me to awa rd the Government prize of
25,000 lire for the b est ope ratic compos ition.
The first prize was awarded to the young com­
poser, Bruno Barilli, for "Emiral," a work
based on a n Albanian legend.

CENTURY WINDOW CONTEST WON BY NEW MEXICO DEALER
Apollo Music Shop, of Albuquerque, Winner of First Prize in Country-wide Contest-Large
Number of Representatives of This Popular Edition Participate With Varied Displays
The recent window display contest, arranged
by the Century Music Publishing Co., in which
several hundred dealers throughout the country
plays related to standard numbers . However,
the fact that man y of the Century publications

T he priz es were $50 for the first winn er; $25
for the se cond; $15 for the third, and $10 for
th e fourth. The Apollo Music Shop, Albuqu e rqu e,
N. M ., was th e winner of the first prize.' A
reprodu ction of this particularly attractive win­
dow is herewith shown. A full window display
of Century titl es, ar ran ged to re s emble a pipe
or gan, in the background, before which were
displa yed other title page s giving the impression
of a mo saic floor. This di splay not only won
the un a nimous prai se of the judges, but previ­
ously had cr ea ted a distinct impression in the
eyes of the music bu ye rs of Albuquerque.
The second priz e was won by Hickey's
Ly ceum Music Store, Ithaca, N . Y. This dis ­
play showed over 200 Centur y titles, including
twelve copy rosett es and si x hand-made signs
of imp ressive ch a ract er, all of whi ch made an
unusually attractiv e combination.
The third prize went to the J Raigor Musi c
Shop, St. Loui s, Mo., and th e fourth prize to
J. Ed. B lack , Springfield, Mo. Missouri was,
seemin gly, well represented. Mr. Black, by th e
way, has won other window display prizes and
throughout the trad e is well-known for the
origina lity as well a s the character of his win­
dow dre s sings.
Ten dollar awards of appreci a tion were given
to the following house s, whose windows de­
served more th a n mere comm e nt: Volkwein
Bros., Pitt s burgh, P a.; Escher Music Shoppe,
Pittsfield, Mass.; E. Hegeman, Philadelphia,
Pa., and]. W. La Bai Music Co ., Baltimore, Md.
The following w ere the judges of the Cen­
tury contest: V. D. Walsh, The Music Trade
Review; F . C. Bruns, Federal Ad vertising
Agency, and B. W. McClellan of the Music
Trade s.

poser was recently comple ted he re and is known
a s The Song Shop, owned by Stone & Verges,
HOllston, Tex. The partners are Billy Stone
and Joseph Verges .
