Schubert wrote hi s fa mous "Se renade" a ll b y
himself; imagine what five mod ern music men,
heads to ge th er, can do . That's how Irving and
Jack K aufman, Frank W illiams, Fra nk Hu g hes
and George B. :.vlcConne ll rea soned, with th e
result tha t th'is quin tet o·f qua lified song-smiths
tu rne d out "Mickey Donohue," a cut e and whim

by the Mills forces .
Clarke & L eslie Songs, In c., 1591 Broadway,
New York City, wi ll, ea rly nex t year, celebrate
its first birth day. This firm, whic h featu res the
work of Grant Clar ke and Edgar Les lie, has
made rapid st rides in its compara tive ly short
life. Whi le it is true th a t th e firm has pub lished
several successes bearing t he name of th e above
wri ters , it by no means has confined its ca tal og
exclusive ly t o th ose writers for, as a ma tt er o f
fact, th ere a re several othe r contributors of
wo rks of current popu lar ity.
Probably the hi g h mark of thi s firm 's career
is the publication of "Dirty H a nd s, Dirty Face,"
a n appealin g ba llad which has bee n pro g ramme d
by vau devi llians everyw h ere and has bee n ex
t ensivel y featur ed by such performers as A I
J o lso n, Nora Bayes, Marion H a rri s, Be ll e Baker,
Avon Comedy Four and o thers .
The firm 's novelty song, "Maggie!" (Corne
Right Upstairs) a lso deve loped into an active
iss ue a nd prese nt indi cations are that it is to
corne in for some larger popularity. This son g,
to ge ther with a new comedy entitl ed "So This
Is Venice," w ill be th e feature of this type of
number with the firm for the next severa l
m onths.
Sidney C. Caine, ge nera l manage r o f Clarke
& Leslie Songs, In c., is well pleased with the
r esults ob tained by his organiza tion.
