ROGER BABSON ADVOCATES GREATER SALES EFFORTS

PITTSBURGH, PII., Dec:muer 10.- The presence
of Rog er \\1. Babson, the not ed eco nomist, in
Pi tt s bu rgh the past week attracted a lar ge nUIll
ber of busines s m en to his a ddre ss. A number of
music dea·l ers were noted in the audience . Mr.
Babson s tated that " ther e are dan ge r sig na ls
standi n g out before the busines s world for th e
year 1924 th a t a re ju st as plain ly in s i~h t as are
the signs at rai lroad cro ss in gs."
Mr. Babson apparently is imbued with the
id ea that the a utomobile is becoming too pop
ular , pointin g o·u t th a t there are now betwee n
14,000,000 and 15,000,000 cars in thi s country, of
whic h on e-fourth were turned out thi s year.
The bad feature in connection with the autos
is th at in the nei ghborhood of 85 per cent are
bought on tim e. Mr. Babson urged the busi-
ness m en of Pittsburgh to becom e acti ve in an
effort to cause the consumers of th eir wares
to maintain th e purchas in g sta ndard a nd to
become as active in the sa le of th eir products
a s are th e automobil e p romoter s. Manufac
tur e rs a nd busines s firms were warned to care
fu ll y consider th e ir ove rh ead expenses in the
co min g year and keep them down to the mini
mum, as a policy of purchasing requirements
from month to month is most likely to prevail.
~ a one can tell at this time, Mr. Babson said,
just wh a t the volume· of business wi ll be for the
year 1924. One thing certain, however, is that
the fundamental principles are not right at the
present time for a continued p eriod of pros
pe rit y. Salesmen will have an oppor tunity to
display thei r ability in their chosen vocation
13
and not continu e to be s impl y order-takers a s
they we r e durin g the war period. H e suggested
that o ld-fa shi oned hon es t y, indu stry, thrift and
service are needed for the developm ent of busi
ness to-day, along with a sane and vital religion
-"a religion th a t will satisfy the soul of a saint
a nd the intellect o f a thinker."
The twent y- second a nniv e rsary sa le of th e
G. W. P. Jone s Musi c Co. , of W a shington, Pa.,
is now under way and, according to Mr. Jones,
is meeting with excellent results. Among the
pianos handled by the firm are the Steinway,
Sohmer, Mehlin , Brinkerhoff, Kimba ll , Packard,
W. P. Haines & Son, Gulbransen, E uphona and
Schriv er & S o n.
H . M. 'vVallrond, age d seventy-one y ea rs, a
well-known piano sa les man of the Pittsburgh
distri ct, di ed in th e Homeopathi c Ho spital,
Pittsburgh, after a brief illness. For twenty
two y ear s Mr. Wallrond had been connected
with th e E. G. H ays Piano Co ., Lester piano
deal e rs. One so n a nd two daughters survive.
The Frederi ck In ve stm e nt Co., holdin g com
pany of the W. F. Frederick Piano Co. , declar ed

Trad: co ndition s in the piano row of the Steel
Ci ty are showing marked signs of activity. One
of the good indications is the general dem a nd
fo r hi gh-grade instruments a nd the substantial
init:al payments that are made by purcha se rs
who are making. tim e payments. Th e piano
dealers are out after business with determina
tion as evidenced by the liberal a dv er ti s ing in
the press.
