Held Strenuous Piano Contest
The San Francisco Bulletin, an even ing news ­
paper, wanted to start its new serial off w it h a
ba ng a nd d ec id ed that the most effective 'way
would be to get people to " say it w ith mus ic."
First, a so ng co ntest was h e ld for th e COIl1­
posers who would write word s and melod y for
a ditty on the th eme "Hun g ry H eart," the nam e
of the seri a l. Baron Key es, a prot ege of Paul
A~h, won. 'W hile th e se rial is runnin q; the son g
can only be bou i,; ht a lo n .," with a copy of the
new spa per, b ut to grind th e melody in to th e
popular ' car two piano-pla yin g co ntest s have
just b een held in a couple of local theatr es. I n
eac h case a committee of busine ss men, aide d
a nd abett ed by a vociferous aud ience, awa rde d
th e pri ze of a Wurli tz er bungalow type piano
to the performer w ho gave the m ost plea sing
r e ndition of Baron Keyes ' song on th e pi an o­
fort e. The contests started an epidemic of prac­
ticin g that is sure to lead to more piano sa les.
