Sales Hints of Value to Dealers
Among- the litera ture sent to the dealers by
various publishing houses the Ditson Novelty
List issued monthly by the Oliver Ditson Co.,
Boston, stands hi g-h for the excellent character
of the material offer ed and th e interest it holds
or should hold for th e dealer who seeks to be
thoroughly familiar with his bus iness and with
the publications he handles.
The Ditson Nov elt y List not only offers in
teresting descriptive matt e r regarding the new
publications and those responsible for them-in
formation that can be used to excellent advan
tage by the dealer and hi s salespeo ple in pre
senting the new prints to the regular clientele,
but there has been a dded recently a new fea
ture-the nation a lity of each of the composers
whose works are listed.
The Oliver Ditson Co. has held out consist
ently and persistently in support of the Ameri
can composer and some time ago adopted the
slogan "The American Composer First," which
has been used regularly in th e literature sent

out by that house. This policy, however, has not
been carried to the point where only the music
of American composers is published; so, there
fore, the indication of the nationality of the
composers is included in the Jist as a guide to
the dealer. This company, naturally, handles
the music of composers of various nationalities '
in order to avoid unjus t di sc rimination against
composers of meritorious works.
The September issue of th e Ditson Novelty
List offers some "outstanding facts to the music
trade" in which some excellent information for
the dealer is presented. The fact s include, for
instance, that the Ditson hou se has cut its pro
duction of new issues 60 .per cent, to the direct
advantage of the dealer in reducing a stock
burden and increasing his turnover.
The service offered by th e Ditson Co. to
dealers in handling- music supplies for schools,
teachers, etc., is also commented on, as is the
company's liberal stock offer. In fact, the con
ditions, as they compare with those of other
days, are so far improved as to make compari
sons unnecessary.

Critics' Approval-Harms, Inc., Publishing
the Music of the Production
What is described by the New York dramatic
critics as a charming- play recently opened at
the Apollo Theatre, New York City: It is en
titled "Poppy" and Madge Kennedy makes her
first appearance on the musical stag-e. The
New York Times says: "The assets of th e play
are so nu.merous and its shortcoming-s so unim
portant· in· the general ensemble that th e enter
tainment can be summed up in a few words.
It is just a good show." Miss Kennedy is de
scribed as having lovely charm and the piece is
immeasurably enlivened by the persona lity and
antics of W. C. Fields.
The book and lyrics are by Doroth y Don
nelly and the music by Stephen Jones and Ar
thur Samuels. "Mary" is, undoubtedl y, the hit
song of the piece, closely followed by "A libi
Baby." Other songs are "Hang Your Sorrows
in the Sun," "Two Make a Home" and "When
You Are in My Arms." Harms, Inc., is the
publisher.

HOW TO WRITE APOPULAR BALLAD
Haydn Wood, Composer of "Roses of Picardy,"
Gives the Recipe for Successful Songs of the
Type in an Interview
Haydn Wood, composer of "Love's Garden of
Roses," "Bird of Love Divine" and the excep
tionally popular "Roses of Picardy," which is
just comin g into its own, is a scion of musical
stock . He was born in 1882 at Slaithwaite, near
Hudd ersfield, England. At the age of fifteen he
gained an open three-years' scholarship at the
Royal College of Music, following which he
went to Brussels an d studied the violin under
Cesar Thomson. Later he visit ed Australia,
Canada, India and New Zealand.
During his student day s in th e Royal College

gaining the Arthur Sullivan prize for composi
tion. Subsequently, he won a prize in the first
Cobbett competition, his composition being an
original phantasy for a s trin g quartet. Other
composi tions of thi s period were an o rchestral
suit e, a pianoforte concerto and "Lochinvar,"

REVIEW
He has other works to his credit, including
some quite lengthy. Several of his songs are
quite popular .in this country. Undoubtedly,
"Roses of Picardy" (Chappell-Harms, Inc.) ,will
give him a national introduction on a wide scale.
He has also written a few words regarding
popular songwriting, which a're given here:
"To write a really popular ballad, first of all
find words suitable for either sex. Write within
as limited a compass as possible and , think of
the amateur all the time; for, after all, he is the
one who buys the song: My most popular song, ,
'Roses of Pi cardy,' is written within a compass
of an octave and a semitone. It seems to me
necessary to write something simple enough for
,the amateur to sing and at the same time effec
tive enough to attract the professional singer.
It is essential that closed vowels should not be
set on hi gh notes; also, it is an excellent plan
to determine the key by the last vowel sound in
the lyric. ' For instance, in my song, 'It is only
a tiny garden,' the lyric concludes with the
words 'But it holds my love and you.' Before
setting this I chose ,a key which would give me
a high note on the word 'love' and not 'you,' as
the latter word is not a good vowel for an end
ing. I wrote thi's particular song in D to enable
me to get a top A on the word 'love' and end
ing with 'you' on the lower, note D. On the
other han d, if the lyric ends with an open vowel
sound, I s hould write in a key somewhere in the
neighborhood of G. The young composer also
requires perseverance and determination in the
matter of bombarding publishers with his manu
sc ript s. Had I been chicken-hearted in thi s re
spect I should certainly have given up the strug
gle years ago, for I truly believe no composer
could ' have received more 'With regrets' from
publishers than I in my early days. I have since
looked through some of these songs and ceased
to wonder why they were rejected."
