Ed. Little, of Sherman, Clay & Co., Unable to
Attend Chicago Meetings—Firm's Publica-
tions' Popularity Retains Him at Home
SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., February 1.—Ed. Little,
manager of the publishing and sheet music de-
partment of Sherman, Clay & Co., had fully
made up his mind to be in Chicago for the
banquet given by the Chicago Piano & Organ
Association at the Palmer House. Guests at
the dinner were the officers and directors of
the Music Industries Chamber of Commerce,
Mr. Little being one of the latter. To-day Mr.
Little regretted his inability to be present. The
success, of the two latest Sherman, Clay & Co.
publications, "After Every Party" and "With-

Little may have to defer his visit East for some
weeks. In addition to having publication branches
in Los Angeles and Seattle, Sherman, Clay &
Co. have them in Minneapolis, Chicago and
New York. Mr. Little is president of the Na-
tional Association of Sheet Music Dealers. Four
of his men attended the Chicago dinner.

Paul Specht, like several of the other na-
tionally known orchestra leaders of the coun-
try, has a number of organizations under his
direction, the work of which must necessarily
reach the standard attained by the original or-
chestra. Recently a group of dance artists,
known as Oxley's Entertainers, of Roanoke,
Va., made use of a Columbia Paul Specht rec-
ord of Tosti's "Good-Bye." The Oxley organ-
ization heard the record in Virginia and learned
the special effects used by Specht and, in a try-
out before him in New York, repeated the
Tosti composition almost as rendered on the
record. They were immediately hired to ap-
pear in a Canadian hotel.
CONFREY WRITES PIANO BOOK
Zez Confrey, composer of "Kitten on the
Keys," "Greenwich Witch" and other well-
known instrumental compositions, published by
Jack Mills, Inc., as well as several song hits
in the 1922 catalog, is now writing a book of
piano instruction which will shortly be pub-
lished by the Mills house. The book is being
prepared as the result of a demand by pianists
all over the country for such a publication.
The contents will include many of Mr. Con-
frey's original conceptions of modern rhythm
and composition and will be adapted for the
beginner as well as the advanced pupil.

Recently at the Palace Theatre, New York,
two M. Witmark & Sons' successes were fea-
tured by the two orchestras that were on the
program. Vincent Lopez and his Pennsylvania
Hotel Orchestra were a feature of the bill and
played the Witmark success, "Carry Me Back
to My Carolina Home." This attractive number
was enthusiastically received by the audiences
at every performance. Herbert Clifton sang the
Witmark song, "All Over Nothing at All," and
the Ben Robert's Palace Theatre Orchestra
played the same song as an exit number.
"CHIMES" RIGHTS TAKEN BY MARKS
The Edward B. Marks Music Co. has acquired
the American rights for a new European suc-
cess entitled "Chimes" (Glocken). This is a
fox-trot with very clever chime effects.
